I actually had to use a pair of vice grips to steer once. My ‘49 Studebaker truck had a bakelite steering wheel, with a splined metal insert that went to the steering shaft. While in the middle of a left turn on a side street, it stripped out, and I was holding the wheel about 3 inches from the column. Luckily, there was no traffic, and I had the vice grips under the seat. I walked home, and me and my dad ended up pulling it home, from the rear, with his ‘54 Chevy. (After I changed my britches)…….,,

I was stationed at Leavenworth and we liked Gates and Bryant’s for different reasons. My boys are still Royals fans from our time there.
