I adopted a black lab from the pound years ago. She was a great dog and a prolific hunter. She was always bringing animals back and leaving them on the porch. She even managed to catch a squirrel one day.My Grandparents took in a black lab dog that was left behind when some neighbors moved out. He was a pretty cool dog but would occasionally kill and bring back small animals and leave them on the front door steps as "gifts" for my Grandmother to discover. Mostly consisted of rabbits and possums but one time he brough back the carcass of a water moccasin snake and that is when my Grandmother lost her shit and about had a heart attack.
We used to walk her at the local park on some back woods trails,, she would follow us about 100’ off of our flank and maybe 50’ ahead of us and then cross over to the our other side of the trail. I never thought anything of it until we came across a guy on the trails who asked us who trained our dog. I was like , huh? Guy says what she’s doing is what trained hunting dogs do to flush out animals.
