I'm really interested in getting a half rack for the bed, but I'm finding it tough to find just the right one. I run with a tri-fold tonneau on all the time and want the ability to quickly add or remove the rack without taking off the tonneau. I'm good with having small brackets coming out and around from under the cover. My ultimate idea is to be able to lift the rack on and off the truck easily (similar to a hardtop hoist) without touching the tonneau cover.

I really like the JRT half-rack (https://www.jcroffroad.com/product/JTBR.html). The aesthetics of it are great and it's just the right functionality for what I want to do. Trouble is the way it mounts to the Jeep means that to get it on or off I'd be removing the tonneau cover each and every time. The brackets don't look to be separable to where I can keep the mount on the sides but still take off the rack.

Does anyone have suggestions or experience on ways to make this idea come to life? For reference, I have a simple Tyger tri-fold on, here's a photo of how it rests on the sides. Like I said, I'm good with sandwiching a bracket in between the bed and the cover so long as it isn't a nuisance with the rack off.

What will the rack be used for? If not for a RTT, perhaps look into Billie bars and a cargo basket? Just a thought.

Are you open to a soft roll up cover? That may make this search easier.

I believe I’ve seen some that have extending brackets out from the rails. Then you just need to roll it out if the way for the rack to go on?

RTT will be in the cards once my budget allows, but not right away. I suppose billie bars might cover the gap in the meantime, but I know that even then I'll be back to this question again anyway. Plus I just really like the look of a true rack over billie bars, just a personal preference thing there.

If the tonneau cover needs to change, I'm okay with that. But I do want to keep the bed completely closed up with the rack on. I like to go topless when off-roading, which means I take off and store the soft top in the bed when I get to the trail along with other things like a compressor and air tank. I want to keep them covered up, but still have recovery tools on the half rack. And I don't need to open the tonneau cover with the rack on, so if the rack's clearance doesn't allow that I'm good there.

The Tuwa Pro racks are roll up compatible and modular- maybe that’s an option? Max modular also has tonneau brackets that work with roll up covers. I’ve researched this pretty extensively, and will ultimately go to a roll-n-lock for security, with a rack.

That Max Modular looks to be exactly what I was looking for! I see the 300/600lb weight rating, I wonder how that might restrict RTT options and use.

I was browsing Reddit the other day and came across something that may work for you. There is a new company called Trukd that are coming out with a set of bed bars/rack. They are similar to Billie bars but better executed.and have a thumb screw to quickly remove the cross bar.

I pre-ordered a set and am planning on putting a roof top tent on it. Then when I am not using the tent, I will unscrew the thumbscrews and hoist the bars and tent up. I would just leave the brackets on at all times and get their MOLLE panels to make it look nicer.

Thanks for this post, these look pretty nice, but man they get a lot for those brackets. LOL I know ALL bed racks seem to be expensive, but the 8020 bars are hardly any of the cost of this bed rack. I know I can always make my own. Thanks again for the post and letting us know about this company.

No problem. I was able to snag some for their pre-order pricing which helps, otherwise it would have been harder to justify.

Honestly, its crazy how much anything metal costs for Jeeps. I am wanting to add a winch to my bumper and getting a winch plate which is a simple piece of sheet metal for The steel bumper is $200-$300.

Please share how the Trukd work out for you. Quality, build, adaptability to cover, etc.

I'm using a rack From BillieBars with my Bestop topper. Bars lift out easy so I can roll the cover forward and haul my motorcycle. Keeps my tent below cab height. So far, I can't complain

Production took longer than expected and I finally got them about a month ago. I also have the molle panels and I think it looks pretty nice. They seem pretty high quality and I don't foresee any issues with them. They had a couple of issues at first during manufacturing but those have all been sorted out and I haven't had any issues with mine.

One thing I like about them is that there is a lot of adjustability and they should work for a wide variety of covers. I also like that I can remove the crossbars easily. However, without the crossbars the uprights aren't quite as stable. There is a little bit of play but so far nothing that concerns me.

Finally had a chance to take some pictures. I have the 6" set and rolling up the tonneau with the rails on is a little work but doable. Mostly I run without the rails on.

Didn't feel like attaching 18 pictures so here is a link to imgur -
