Overkill diesel fuel filter with Auxiliary tank

A friend and I decided to build an auxiliary fuel tank to go around my in-bed mounted spare tire.
The in-bed tank will gravity feed the factory tank. The factory fill location will be abandoned. DEF fill to remain in factory location.
Aux tank will be about 20 gallons of extra fuel.
The filter is a 1 micron filter/water separator.
Hopefully get it finished up in the next few weekends. Got excited with the base tank finished and filter arriving.

i am on same situation like you , “looking for aux tank” . Do you think we can relocate the def tank and removed the OEM fuel tank and make a better fuel tank?

Yes that can be done. I’m not doing that…yet.
The only reason for me to remove the OEM tank would be for a Tri-link suspension set up. It’s a daily driver for the next few years.

New tank installed. Not complete. Finish hose and fittings ordered. The aux tank is functional, need different hose between tanks and to finish up breather. New tank is about 20 gallons.

A little more progress with pics and details.
Needed to purchase a fill hose 90*. The factory hose is so thin, no manipulation allowed.
New filter seals to nipple passing thru tank to filler hose.
Moved the DEF fill inside the bed as well.
Needed a 5/8 barbed Tee fitting to relocate and connect Aux tank to factory tank vent.
Using the new filter upside down. Added weep holes for water to be pushed out bottom.
The filter is elevated in the Aux tank by 2”, with sloshing only a gallon is left in the tank. Hopefully the dirty gallon.
Added a Aux tank drain for cleaning.

Still to do. Build an aluminum canister for the vent filter. This will be mounted to a custom tool box. The Tee fitting will be replaced by tapping into and out of the filler neck after toolbox is complete

This has really been on my mind as of late, at say 20mpg (not unusual for the ecodiesel) you would be looking to have a near 900 mile range. That would be fantastic to know you have on board. I wonder if a removable option could be fabbed up, meaning you could mount and run for long trips but remove when you might need the bed for truck stuff on the daily.

That could be done. A tee below the Aux tank with a cap/plug for when Aux tank is removed. The tank vent will need to be mounted higher than Aux tank when used. Possibly use the factory vent with an added vent when using Aux tank. 2 valves could be used to turn off one and use the other.

The most important part of the Aux tank for me was the added fuel filter. One bad tank of fuel is all the fuel pump needs to explode.

My first problem with the new Aux tank is….the pump shutting me off at $100. Standard diesel pumps faster than the filter flows. Takes a couple minute pause to fill both tanks. The new tank is closer to 22 gallons. Carrying 40 gallons to start a trip is great.

Progress. The custom tool box has been changed to a DeeZee. AZ had it for 50% off MSRP. Custom couldn’t compete. Next will be making a cover for the dual batteries and ARB compressor, Air tank to fit under box overhang and power tank mounts.
FYI. That’s a 42x13.50x20 in the bed.
