Just wondering how a tablet or I pad can give GPS location without any phone cell coverage. I want to get X Offroad or Gaia for off road where there is no cell coverage.

I think I found the answer. The ones with a cell phone are GPS enabled. Wi Fi only are not.

Yep, went through this myself. Ended up waiting for a Verizon deal and got an iPad mini with a data plan. Fits the bill perfectly, and we can watch shows in bed on it as well.

Actually majority of tablets have GPS built in regardless if they have LTE or not. Mine are all wifi only and have GPS. Personally I like the tablet idea but switched to the Garmin Overland GPS myself just for ease of use. I still carry my tablet with mapping options but 99% of the time use the Garmin

With Garmin it's all there all the time. I don't think it has everything that Gaia has. But for the average offf roader it's probably got more than needed. The tablet would be nice on trips for the net.

GPS location doesn't depend on cell coverage. However, getting the maps from the internet requires cell or wifi. Many mapping maps (dunno about X Offroat or Gaia) allow you to download the area of interest to your device in advance, then you'll have access to it when you're offline.

That's true for Apple devices, but not Android. Virtually all Android devices have GPS even though they may not have cell connectivity.

Don't need the expensive one with cell provision. Just download your maps in the OnX ap and they work just fine on a regular ipad with wifi.
