I changed all 4 ball joints this evening. I had read to put the jeep in 4x4 before removing the passenger axle and that should hold the FAD collar in place. I forgot to do it before I jacked it up and removed the tires so I did it with the front in the air. The dash indicated it was in but I don’t believe it actually ever engaged. I changed all the ball joints and re assembled everything. Now I’m second guessing if the collar stayed in place or not. Is it possible to reinstall the passenger shaft if the collar isn’t where it should be? The shaft went back in place without issue. I’m contemplating popping the FAD off to assess for piece of mind.

I did the same, forgot to engage before disassembly. If you got the c-clip off and back on, you’re good. Not really anywhere else for the parts to go. Just test after you’re done, and GTG

You’re fine. I did the same thing. If you felt the axle engage with its splines, that’s the collar. You’re good.

No c clip for the outer shaft. Just the inner one.

If you decide to pull the fad, no harm and you’ll see how things go together. But I highly recommend buying a new fad gasket first. They don’t come off in great shape always, and the gasket is cheap.

I need to be able to drive it today. Something tells me the local dealership doesn’t stock the gasket. I couldn’t feel it engage as unit bearing was corroded slightly so I had to tap the axle/unit bearing back into the hub to get the bolts back in.

It was in stock at my dealer. Same day. The likelihood is you’ve got it together just fine. If you pull the fad, realize it’s going to drain a lot of diff fluid, and you’ll need to top it off via the diff cover fill plug. The diff housing slowly feeds the fad housing with rotation of the axle, so I lifted my driver side way higher than the passenger, and manually rotated my driveshaft like 20 times. Then I rechecked it with the axle level. Then rechecked again after some driving.

Dealer is at least 3 days out with a gasket… not sure what to do. I need to drive it, but not sure if it’s assembled correctly and don’t want to harm anything if the collar is laying down in there somewhere. There’s gotta be a way I can tell if it’s installed without pulling the FAD

I just sent you a pm with my number. But the easiest way is by feel to verify engagement. Give me a call and we can walk through it. Basically no wheel, axle jacked up, rotate it by hand to feel whether it’s engaged in the splines of the collar. I’d do this in 2wd and 4hi. If it feels normal with hand rotations, you should be good to test it in the yard with 4hi and 4low.

When I did the ball joints on my 22 I didn’t even mess with the FAD. Just pulled the axles, did my thing, put the axles back in place. No issues for me
