Search for ' Samko Winch ' in YouTube. He demonstrates a good option, if you have a hitch receiver.
Watching that guy on top of that line and touch it with his hands made me feel like I was watching one of those "when it goes wrong" videos. Neat solution though.

Jeep Gladiator PORTABLE WINCH (not bumper installed) trying to snatch out~2

This is two pictures of my "portable winches" the second one is about to be put to us. The first photo was the rear winch for that vehicle, a old H.F. 8k winch the front one is a Ramsey 8k. The Ramsey winch has been ran hard and done some impressive jobs. Would, I use a removable winches definitely. I've welded up a few portable winch mounts, a few light duty ones using 2k winches, not for full size vehicle though.
Strangely both of them winches haven't failed me in use, more than I can say about some other brands. I'll not sling mud on that right now.

It goes without saying that a winch is a must tool if you gonna be offroading, specially if going by yourself or other fellow "light" off roaders, so you have some peace of mind and not get stuck at some point in a trail

The issue foe me is that in order to get the classic bumper winch, you need to have a bumper that has that capability and then install, wiring, etc. It will ramp up the bill.

As I have the OEM bumper and not looking into swapping it for a winch ready one at this time, I was looking into portable winches and got curious about this one:

https://www.amazon.com/RUGCEL-WINCH-Electric-Integrated-Synthetic/dp/B0D12TXRVR/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=1JM9L3UZEOQUX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.rm0DVV-ut_lCEDXaU5UL3YQ85AFec9EXMSHM65n04JnAKW_InD10LXsUKmTvXCra2Ikyts93cdUYFb161LrmOyDNmXDBpjv_EfrRmqRXq1ReCAYdbCQZU8gNu6Ydtol9TUArBd5BcPQadzN60oFhznlxk14E-vfb6LDig1jLN9hu7bx1l-hURqUOnWqmxF1o2iWuaaoqkxZ4lm-0VNV0qeAebY5zo9tIYjeN2BQ5AvvAb4puxuLhVWjC9wxzaMXf0j8-Q6RsWzS_b04w-Krwb4Q7etRPhj6zIkCJ4QbxicM.SpMapDfbZ9c-RR69sZVL2USbw9f94ti37_b3y4Y7C5w&dib_tag=se&keywords=portable+winch&qid=1728044671&s=automotive&sprefix=portable+winch,automotive,191&sr=1-3-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

As I keep researching these options, I have a couple of questions.

Is this a good alternative to have in the back of the truck in case you need it while offroading?

What are other suggestions regarding this type of portable winch? Also, what load rating would be good for a winch like this?
I almost went with a portable winch. I had one on my 93 YJ with receivers front and rear, which was perfect. Then I didn't have to carry the thing around when not off-roading.

I think that having it in the rear makes more sense than in the front, in many situations, such as getting yourself into a mud hole. The front makes sense for helping to climb a hill.

If you go that way, Rural King occasionally has a great deal on a package that includes the winch and hitch mount cradle, for $649. It is a 12k lb winch and it comes with everything, including wiring, quick disco plug, and even a snatch block and winch cover.

The limiting factor for me was finding a front receiver setup that did not reduce my approach angle. I never found anything satisfactory. My old YJ had a simple steel front bumper with the receiver right in the middle of it. It was thick steel and super strong. It did not have any real impact on approach angle unless the winch was inserted, and even then, it was minor. So I went with a very clean front setup with a Rugged Ridge Arcus bumper and Tactik winch from Quadratec.

If I had seen that deal on the Champion, I probably would have gone ahead and done it, even with only a rear mount. That champion package has 75 ratings and averages 5 stars, too.
