Oh its real, the FAD is a known weak spot on the Dana 44's, go a little too hard on some boulders and "SNAP!".

There's axle re-enforcement kits like the ones that Artec makes if you're worried.

Although the kind of abuse that can break the FAD will usually break other things first. Not really a concern for most people.
