I'm thinking of getting some unfinished skid plates for rear shock mounts and control arm joints from Rusty's Offroad.

Is it worth getting powder coated? Or just rattle can spray paint and touch up as needed?

Thanks in advance.

It's a use choice.

If you want them to look good in the parking lot, powder coat them.

If you plan to drag them over rocks, paint them and keep the rattle can handy in the truck so you can paint them again to cover the scratches.

Spray it.

Ive done mine with spray multiple times in the past and never had any issues, both PC and spray come off with contact.

Make sure to clean and prep before painting though.

Normally, I’d say Powder coating - but if you’re gonna rub them over rocks & stuff - stick with paint. There are a gazillion types of different ‘paint’ or ‘coatings‘ you can use. But ultimately….good clean & prep work is important. Being able to spray over the rock rash is also important.

Good feedback so far and all agree that painting is the way to go. Thanks!

As someone with even powdercoated rock rails (Ace Engineering), I can say, even in that application, where they DON'T come into contact very often with much, other than gravel, dirt, salt, and the person in parkinglots who decide to park too close, and wham their door into them.. even with the level of powdercoating Ace/Steinjager puts on these things.. it doesn't hold up. I have to wirebrush and rattle can them about once a year.

Even tried fluidfilm for a year, to see if it made much of a difference.. spoiler.. it didn't. So, textured matte rustoleum is kept onhand ;)

Real Jeepers carry or own Rustoleum, flat black, in spray cans and small brush on cans.

If it's a mall crawler... powder coat.
