But frankly, if I am not going to tow, but use it as a daily driver (in hot Vegas) with light off roading in the desert, and stay well within the GVWR, do I need the heavy duty cooling fan and the 240 amp alternator, or would the standard fan and 220 amp alternator suffice without any heating issues?
Am I overthinking?
Iproutes...do you use a nhrp always? vrrp hsrp or other? If yes..you need the 240 and 850.

Why are we talking about Cisco routers and Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP) or other protocols??

So, it's going to depend on the router protocols in use.

OK, then..........

Let me put it this way - in the desert, especially when skipping the dessert, I'd probably be tempted to put in the 240 and larger fan. Around here, meh, no, not even with OSPF.
It's all dependent on if he's using a layer 3 switch.

Whatever, geesh, thanks for bringing up distant memories..........

Seriously, don't let too many hops get in the way.

You'd be ok with the stock situation - I mean, Mojave has been tested in hot sand and is sold as a desert runner around the Middle East - but get into a hard crawl or climb, moving slowly in the heat, only the fan pulling air through, there's something about the comfort of that extra capability.

The swap is simple, you can likely find good used parts, maybe sell your 220 to someone with a 180.

I have been using the 850 watt fan with a 220 amp and have had zero issues while towing a heavy camper.

No one said you'd have obvious issues, however:
Under heavy load, with an alternator working at capacity and the loading being a bit over what's needed, the voltage will be low, potentially not charging batteries as needed
and
Operating an alternator at over 80% load rating for extended periods, especially in a hot engine bay, greatly shortens its life.

Can you do it? Sure! And you won't see a problem pop up in your face.

I'm not saying the above will happen, but it's a risk. Get where that fan is needed for an extended period, in traffic, at night, lights running, charging a camper battery, operating electric trailer brakes and so on..........
Maybe watch your voltage. Keep check that the batteries are fully charged after a long run in hot weather with an electric load to see how things look.

Might be just fine - but there's a reason for the larger alternator, we know Jeep won't throw stuff on when something cheaper will do just fine.
