When determining noises in the differential - there are multiple places for "play" to come into play -
There's the lash between pinion and ring gear, then the lash or play between the carrier gears (spider gears or carrier pinions) and the side or axle gears.
If the play is all felt in the pinion (drive pinion) and ring gear - that's not good.
I believe the typical is .006 - .010 backlash for pinion to ring gear for differentials like these.
Some get into .012-.015 depending.
