You can run 40's on bone stock axles; all you need is a lift, gears and maybe spacers depending on the wheels and backspacing. I went with 5.13 gears.

I wheeled on stock axles and 40's and never broke anything; its just taking time and being careful. I started taking more trips so I beefed up my front axle but my rear is still unmodified/ stock to this day.
I think I’m going to do it. Eventually may truss and gusset the axle but I’m thinking I can get away with the shafts for quite some time. If one snaps I’ll just upgrade then.

Your rear axle shafts will leak before the front snaps lol. Both of mine did; i should have done chromoly at the time but as each side went out, I replaced individually.

Eventually, I did RCV front shafts, artec full front truss with c gussets, lockers and dif covers... just to get smacked by a lady that ran a stop sign. I had to replace the front axle and went with an Ultimate 44.

There are quite a few people floating around with 40’s on completely stock axles with no issues.

I went all out with mine. Both axles trussed, 5.13’s, RCV’s (front), dynatrac ball joints, synergy knuckles, apex high pressure steering and cooler, Metalcloak HD Steeriny, and Metalcloak track bar and steering box brace with sector shaft brace.

I don’t worry about it much, I pick my line and go. I’m not throttle happy and have a good track record of wheeling all over the place without breakage. Hell I ran a locked Dana 30 with 37’s with nothing but C gussets way back for many years and wheeled it all over. I don’t drive it like a rock bouncer because it isn’t a rock bouncer. If you look at wall thickness of the tubes and bearing size, the newest 44’s are every bit the axle Dana 60’s were in years past, you can break anything if you’re stupid……
