The Caldor Fire is in the worst place possible for the Rubicon. Fires in this part of the state generally move towards the north east. It is already creeping close to Ice House Road with 0% containment. If it grew to the size of Dixie it would wipe out Rubicon and parts of Tahoe. It already broached Emigrant Gap.

A little funky to read the overlay of the outline because there's a lake in the middle of Dixie that isn't in Tahoe and roads and all. But point is... this Caldor Fire could prove extremely problematic for some of the biggest off road trails.

I don't think I ever realized that the Rubicon was over that far. We have engines on the Dixie, I expect to go up there soon.

Got word that the Forestry Service closed the national forest - the Rubicon trail is closed until 30 Sept. Lets hope this fire comes under control!

The good news is that Highway 50 has a river running along the entire length of it, same side as fire. Will help them to keep it from jumping the road.

I would not be going into the Sierras from Aug 1 onwards in a drought year like this.

All the winds look eastward, with some north east showing up. It will hopefully keep it running east away from the trail but Mormon Emigrant is already toast.

Luckily for the trail all the prevailing winds have been NE or E in a direction away from any part of the trail. Not entirely out of danger yet but it would take a significant wind shift northward that isn't in the near term forecast.

So the trail should be fine. The rest of South Lake basin... will see.

The Rubicon is the least of worries. I would not want to be a resident of the Tahoe basin when this fire reaches it. Only Mother Nature will stop Caldor and Dixie.

I live close enough that we get the smoke no matter which way the wind blows.

Caldor was holding on the eastern containment lines overnight, the issue is the front north of 50 has no containment lines cut, so going to be all aircraft. If it cannot be stopped it will just end around the containment into Echo Summit. If so then it's bad bad news. Containment lines roughly in green here.

Lots of windfall between those points. Very difficult for hand crews or aircraft.

What's that like two miles from the summit? Less than that to Sierra At Tahoe ski resort?

Based on the NASA satellite pass around noon all the eastern containment lines held. Now that's when it starts to get windy so will need to wait for the evening report out, usually 7pm or so.

But nothing new easterly was pickedup on NASA FIRM at noon.

They also had some very impressive Chinooks in from SoCal that can fly at night and dump 3,000 gallons of water or retardant and refill in minutes.
