I hope you get this figured out, and resolved.

my interpretation is that your JTRD is just telling you that it identifies as an “off-road only” vehicle. ;-)

At least it's not trying to identify as a Prius and.........never mind, won't go there.

Before I take it in on Monday I need to get this up on my lift today to make sure I didn't bend any off the linkage for the transfer case. We were not wheeling in anything difficult, mostly sand, but there is always a chance a rock or something may have gotten wedged between the skid plates and the transfer case, albeit a very remote chance in this case.

Check for pinched or pulled wires or connectors at t-case and both axles as well as bent or wedged linkage. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

It was REALLY in 4 Lo, occurs while in gear. No grinding, and I believe the dash indicator showed N (Neutral), it didn't indicate 4 Lo. I have had several Wranglers and two Gladiators and never had anything like this occur. I have to assume it is electrical as the transfer case selector was still in the left gate (2 Hi, 4 Hi, Neutral) and not in the right gate (Neutral, 4 Lo). Hopefully the dealer doesn't pull the "We couldn't replicate this" routine and ignore it.

I wonder if this could be related to the rear locker issue and when the locker engages it shifts it to 4 Lo?
There’s not an electrical actuator in the transfer case. I really don’t see how what you are experiencing is possible. The planetary gears are spinning at 4:1 when the T-case gets shifted into low. How fast were you traveling when this occurred? If it shifts while going more than a couple of miles per hour, there would be significant grinding.

No pinched or pulled wires or bent linkage that I can see...thanks for the suggestion.

I was not going very fast at all as we were on a trail. I don't understand this either, but it is happening. I will try to do a drive video before I take it in to show what is happening.

I recall my 2020 being a beaner to get into 4L when I wanted some grunt to pull my trailer up a gravel hill through snow and the wheels were settled in.
Going into 4L at any speed is akin to trying to shift into 1st gear at more than a few miles an hour except that at least you have synchronizers in modern transmissions - still, it's a lot of speed difference to take care of in a short time - it isn't easy.
