Ahhhhhh, the good old Italian tune... got it! :like:
I thought that was just revving it up in the driveway in neutral?? Ha.

There's actually some justification for what I mentioned. High combustion pressures help to seat the rings.

High rpm help to make sure the step that forms at the top of the rings travel is high enough up in the cylinder.

I sure hope there's basically no rod stretch with these engines and the light small pistons.

I'm more concerned about varnish build-up on areas where parts don't get "exercised" like valve stems, lash adjusters, that sort of thing.

This is such a hard topic for some people to understand but I think the OP was asking about AVERAGE MPG, not what you get on the occasional drive. Sure mine will sometimes see 22mpg but my overall average over the Jeeps whole life has been about 15mpg. Those saying they get 26mpg on the gasser are heading downhill or going 40mph behind a semi. That is not your average. Thats you got lucky or either you didnt calibrate your speedo after your tires and lift. Jeep also says it needs a 300 mile break in. Some people are posting some old break in period stuff from their 80's CJ.

When I was younger my dad and I used to autocross a fair amount. Every weekend there were some first timers bringing their 60,000 mile Porsche or Miata or Mustang to compete for the first time.

A couple of times per year someone would break a ring because the cars had never spent any significant time at high rpm.

Its enough of a thing that people who buy older cars like Miatas to either race in the Spec Miata class or to run track days will pop the head and use something to reduce or eliminate the step before they race it.

Of course we raced a first gen RX-7 GSL-SE so there was no worry about that kind of thing.

Speaking of small pistons.

I stopped at a Harley dealer a couple of weeks ago to bring my dad's bike home. They had 114 cu in bikes on the showroom floor. Thats !!!!- 1868 - !!!! cubic inches.

Almost a 2 liter V twin. 934 cc per cylinder. Insane. It's like a 4 cylinder 3.6.

Yup! Average over 1,000 miles so far in my Gladiator is 15.5…

Sure hope that improves over time…but I truly do not care…I am enjoying this vehicle sooooo much.

If the concern is mainly MPG, switch to the diesel. If not...full-send how it is and just enjoy it.

Or...switch to diesel anyway, and enjoy it even more :)

I have like diesel engines for decades... my 2012 BMW X5 diesel is still running great after only 120,000 miles... gave it to my niece so she had wheels for college.... my previous 2019 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison was diesel as well... but it started giving me all sorts of emission and fuel related errors... scared the crap out of me in terms of long term reliability... so it was gone in a trade in for my wife's car...

I wanted to give diesel another try but I just could not do it... so this time around I went with the gasoline engine option on the Gladiator... I sure hope I do not regret it... I really want to own this Jeep for many, many, many years....

Around town and rural driving (my area…a lot of hills)….a chunk of that towing a utility trailer around…results in pretty terrible fuel economy. ~15 MPG (JTR w/3.6).

It’s not bad on the highway (my two cents), but it’s remarkably terrible (in the fuel economy department) around town.

Mine over the last 6 months. JTR AT, 35" with a levelling kit. I'm pretty happy with the economy but the place is pretty flat, I don't thrash it and do tend to sit at 65-70 as I'm not in a rush! It does get regularly bashed around the sand so overall MPG is good.

I've driven over 6,000 miles since September 28th when I pickup up my gladiator and have a lifetime average of 15.7. Half of that milage was towing and at least a third of the rest is low speed gravel and dirt road driving. All things considered, with a curb weight over 5,000 lbs I think it's pretty reasonable.

My old man's XJ would average 18-ish with about 800lbs less curb weight. Again, for capability and design, these get pretty darn good milage all things considered.

Lol, cross country move + lots of errands house building. I wish I were getting paid but we figured it was better to ensure this in a new vehicle suited to task rather than pushing the limits of our old car then trying to sell it.
