In grammar school in the 1960s we had a lot of local scientists come by and give lectures on various topics. I remember one about the last ice age about 20,000yrs ago and that we were in a warming trend and that within our lifetimes we might see average temps rise a little, like maybe a degree or so. A number was mentioned for the ocean temp rising that would be catastrophic and I don't remember the exact number but the thing that stuck in my mind is "we may see global warming within our lifetime" and this was around 1967 and we were all 10yr old kids then.

Think about that, we are on the uptrend coming out of an ice age and 40 or even 100y years ago scientists knew the earth would be warming for the next many thousands of years and that the times we are in right now might see a little global warming. This has nothing to do with people or factories or smog or CO2, its just what the earth does.

So far nobody can tell us exactly how much if any influence humans might be having on this warming trend. It might be zero. It might be a little, who knows? Nobody knows. So why would we do anything that affects our lives to change it when we have no idea that we are even contributing to it??? We could possibly ditch all cars, stop all manufacturing, not use a drop of crude oil and so on and nothing will change except we revert back to cave man ways.

Please tell me why we should change anything right now. And don't get me started on taxes!

So do you think anyone would use a natural climate occurrence to further their own ambitions whether it be monetary or personal gain? ?

One word on Global Warming, Volcano, when, not if, we a big one, history shows how fast and what will happen. We survived and adjusted, it is about Power, Control and Money! Not Covid, masks and CO2. See ‘the year without a summer’….
Tax and Tracking, 1984 is here
Obey or be crushed.

WRONG THINK DETECTED!!

1984 is a great book. Unfortunately its been added to my list if things that started as fiction and have…changed…

currently it ranks right next to the movie idocracy for me.

As long as we pay taxes on gas and diesel then I support a mileage tax for BEVs. They will cause road deterioration just like ICE vehicles.

Would you support a tax on miles driven to curb climate change. Why or why not and If so, should electric vehicles be taxed the same or not?
No.

The professor was only off by 100 years or so. Glaciers are receding, that's a fact. I've seen the glaciers of GNP, and there's photographs of them through the years.

As far as a VMT...

What are the purposes of taxes? To pay for government services. Everyone pays the "same" amount into the gov't pot, so that *everyone* can enjoy the services (yes, this is highly simplistic).

You don't get to pay 3x or 4x your tax to the local police and fire department so they will respond 3x or 4x faster if you have an emergency.

How about addressing the problem- people driving 20,000+ miles a year. Excluding travelling jobs (think Snap-On truck, cleaners, plumbers, etc.), why are people driving this much to a central job?

Because real estate prices are too f**king high. People are forced out to the suburbs and rural areas because it's cheaper out there. And since everyone has to drive to work - mass transit sucks outside of the downtown core in most places - they require highways.

But everyone benefits from the road infrastructure. Delivery routes, bus routes, emergency routes, on and on. Oh, let's not forget bicyclists, skaters, and other non-licensed conveyances that use the road.

To make people pay for "more than their share" because they can't live in or near the city, they are penalized with lost time (commuting), higher costs (fuel, wear & tear), and now taxes?

Note- this isn't a well-thought-out senate testimony; just word vomit on my position.

Automobiles are such a small fraction of the total amount of pollution made. Would be much better to focus on reducing the carbon footprint of / reducing usage of container ships and airplanes
There are proven hybrid technologies for Ferries, so why not use them for container ships....totaly agree with this, aircraft on the other hand might be a little more challenging, but definitely not impossible, likely be 5-10 years down the road, but still doable.

Edit:
My insurance company gives incentives for lower mileage...reduced rates for lower mileage, the lower the mileage per year the lower your yearly rates, along with good driving of course....worked great while I was working at home, but not so much now I guess that I'm back to work in the office, lol

I really hope this post is a joke.
There is a method in which a person or people can flood individuals with information and that information could be a half truth, the whole truth or falsehood, but the intent is to incite a reaction or feeling from the person or target audience. It's been going on 24/7 for a long time now and so my post is just a feeler to gage how well this has worked on a small segment of the population. It's not a joke, Iam truly curious how others feel about this topic.
