I regeared my Jeep to 5.38 a year ago and it has been trouble free and quiet running at all speeds / conditions.

However, after the truck sat at the airport for a week, it started to have a loud whining sound on the drive home. I have an appointment with the shop next Monday but I wanted to see if anyone here had some insight.

The sound is odd to me and I have a feeling it is not the gears. The sound is very similar to what a loud electric motor makes. The pitch is pretty low starting around 25 mph then continuously increases in pitch as the speed increases. By 70 it is very high pitched to the point I initially thought it was electronic in nature. Nothing I do will change the sound, i.e., sounds the same regardless of gear, 2h / 4auto, Neutral, during acceleration / deceleration.

I get the sense it has to be some sort of bearing (pinion? Wheel? Carrier?) but I have no vibration or grinding. The whining / whirring sound happens 100% of the time.

Any thoughts on this? I am limiting the amount of driving I do for the next week at least.

Cheers

Well...took it in today to have the shop look at it and confirmed it is a pinion bearing. Really weird the circumstances that it happened and lucky for me, two weeks before end of warranty. Shop is ordering all new Ring & Pinion and install kit no questions asked. :)

Cheers
