Saw this in a parking lot, to me it looked like the bead was on outside of the rim, am I crazy or is this wrong?

if it was missing a bead lock ring the tire would come right off.

also its has a chrome cover on the side marker and no name tires i would be shocked if it was a on a true bead lock wheel.

looks normal to me

A lot of offroad tires include a bead/rim protection shoulder on the tire carcass. This o e looks to be very pronounced.

Some tires have a 'rim protector' bump built into the sidewall, just above the bead mount surface.

If that "feature" is on the tire in the OP, then the tire being too wide for the rim width would show a profile like that.

edit: beat by ACAD!

It is designed to protect the rim and tire bead interface, stop it from being marred or gravel shoved in etc.

Unless you brought tire irons and goo, a trail side fix in this area is highly unlikely.

Just don’t see how it’s an advantage off road

It's not. It will only protect against mild efforts to damage the wheel edge. The rubber will deflect under substantial pressure and the wheel edge will take damage.

My wheeling rig had MTs with these, and mounted on steel wheels. That edge was ground down in many spots offroading.
