FWIW the gen 3 (currently $349) can now use the $50 roam plan. Trio makes a 12v power supply ($90) to power it from your vehicle. Just ordered a Gen 3. I need a bed rack to mount it to now haha
Thank you so much. Super helpful.

$349 one time / up front cost ain’t bad. Plus $50/mth or $600 a year for WiFi is workable

FYI. We had an emergency situation whereby we had to call 911, and we had no cell coverage. This starlink would have been super helpful back then.

Plus we go camping a few times a year for scouts.

Quick follow-up question. Does this Gen 3 work only when stationary? Or it could work whilst driving the jeep to the campsite (granted 5G via cell should probably work in most places).

that’s exactly why I got it. We like to head to the more rural parts of the beach and there’s no cell signal there. Plus we’re planning a trip up to Colorado next year and I hear some spots are also dead zones.

The gen 3 can be used in motion. That’s why I’m semi-permanently mounting it to the bed rack (that I don’t have).

Thanks for clarifying. I assume the mini is smaller. Which is great for backpacking.

But if I need it for just around the campsite (or I can GMRS call the person at the campsite to make an emergency / 911 call), is the standard better in some sense?

I assume bigger and heavier so not great for back packing. But bigger and gets better satellite connection?

to phrase the question differently, what is the difference between the mini / $599 and the standard / $349

From all my research I’ve gathered that the gen 3 is slightly to marginally better as far as speed and stable connection goes. The mini was my first choice due to it being an all-in-one device but that price tag turns me off. I wanted gen 3 performance in the mini package with the gen 3 sale pricing. Who knows when that will happen so I went ahead and got the gen 3. I think it’s portable enough for my use case. I’m not backpacking any time soon or at all haha my use case is reliable communication wherever I am. And if the wife can watch some lifetime and not bother me while I enjoy some beers out in some nice desolate areas then that’s also a win.

Found this YouTube video comparing both. Super helpful.

I am an idiot when it comes to all thing electricity and mechanical. I am leaning towards the mini given half the power consumption and ease of powering it.

I’d lean towards too if the budget allowed. All you need is that 3D printed adapter thing and a cordless drill battery and you’re set. That being said, knowing my luck they’ll probably drop the price of the mini since I’ve just purchased the gen 3. I was trying to wait as long as possible in hopes that would happen but my impulsiveness has gotten the best of me today.

I guess it was a glitch. The $50 plan is not available to choose when ordering the standard dish today.
Yeah, it appears you have to get the Mini to get the $50 plan.

Am excited that it shipped and is on its way to my house. Can’t wait.
Last campsite had crappy cell reception.

Would blow the other Adult leaders when I pull out a TV and live stream a college football game at the next scout campout. 😂😂😂

so far I like it a lot!! Great way to communicate when desired or needed. Works well even in some trees. I have not tried while moving though

I’m moving to an area with worse coverage, so will be getting one for the house without question, but also for at least a second car. For the second car, it’d be nice to not need to spend “flat high performance” panel money.
