We didn't see this with the 2nd Gen EcoDiesel, but we've seen this happen with the 3rd gen EcoDiesel. From my understanding, air flow becomes restricted when the DPF gets full of ash, but in certain conditions, the heat and pressure can eventually lead to cracking.

The fact that you had 85,000 miles on your factory DPF while running a full SAPs oil, then I can only assume that your DPF was nearing the end due to ash loading. And at some point, you had the perfect high heat/high pressure conditions to cause the ceramic core to crack.
You may be right.

The troubling thing is that through this period, we were dealing with the CP 4.1 fuel pump issue, and unavailability of the solution, that we were all focused on not shraplnelling our fuel pump, and not focusing on not clogging our DPF. I've seen a post somewhere about using too much EDT can cause a DPF failure... where people were ensuring to put in additives so they didn't blow up their fuel pump.

it seems like the narrow engineering degrees of freedom before failing of different components has me scratching my head on long term stability of this platform.

We see a lot of DPFs needing replaced between 120,000 - 150,000 in the Ram trucks. There's been a few failures in the 100,000 - 115,000 range, so clearly how we drive impacts DPF longevity. Also, a lot of 3rd gen EcoDiesel owners are running a full SAPS oil which is the biggest issue. We're seeing DPFs last 300,000 miles when using a low SAPS oil.
…and which oils are these?

The oils that are CK-4 rated low ash. For example, we have a guy on the Ram forum that is about to turn 300,000 miles on his Gen 3 EcoDiesel using Rotella T6.
