So I was rocking the RAM floor mount and my iPad air in the slide in holder/Otterbox case before, but this interior is just too small and that mount and device will take up too much room on the passenger side to make it comfortable on trips, especially long ones. I think an iPad mini is a much better solution like Venture4wd on YouTube is using to run maps with a tethered Garmin GPS. Curious to see what mounts everyone is using and how you have things configured, thanks in advance ?

Yeah there’s no real good way I feel like. It’ll either block your passenger seat or it’ll block your view of the road. Neither is good. Typically I can get by with either onX or Google Maps via car play.

I've an old and new Mini, they're too big if you have the 8.4" screen. An Air would be obtrusive.

I use an iPhone 13 Max Pro in the Bulletpoint mount. I did use Gaia for the big screen and OnX on the phone, but now OnX works through CarPlay and Android Auto. Maybe look for an older 11/12 Max?

The only downside is I can't use my real phone when the iPhone is plugged in, but that's been OK.

I use this dash bar ( Jeep Gladiator Dash Bar | Rugged Ridge ) which basically puts a bicycle handlebar in your Jeep. Or at least that's how I try to explain it haha. All tube mounts / bicycle mounts work with it.

I have the GoPro tube mount and the Rugged Ridge phone mount on mine but they also have a tablet mount, just read the size before buying because it is for pretty small tablets. ( Jeep Gladiator Universal Electronics Mount | Rugged Ridge )

I've got the iPhone Max and run the Expedition Essentials deck on the dash. Yeah the Air would be gigantic no doubt, so definitely need a mini to run in the truck, otherwise I'd have no vision out the passenger side half of the windshield basically lol

I run a Proclip mount with both a magnetic phone holder and a ram ball.
Mount the tablet with a slipgrip holder to the ram ball.
It works, but I would think one of the more robust mounts (vs the Proclip) might be better.
The Slipgrip holder and ram stuff is solid, use it on my motorcycles.

I didn't want to cut into any precious winshield space and I can't stand U connect, so I run an IA Jl3001. Native mapping apps like Gaia and Onx, etc on a 10" screen without anything sticking up above the dash.. I've been really happy with this setup.

I have the same bar and the tablet mount and it holds my iPad pro 11” in an otterbox defender case. Just barely but it is secure and stable, at least for overlanding in FL and the SE.

Any idea what the thread is on that RAM ball mount to the dash handle there? That would be ideal to move out of the way when not in use, then adjust it up for an iPad mini for Gaia on trail/highway. How's that radio replacement work for you, seamless with all the functions mostly?

If I had to take a guess, I think it might be an M8 thread, but I didn't look at it that closely when I put it in.

It works well for my tablet, but I don't really use it since I installed the IA..

For the most part, I don't have any issues with it. As far as I can tell the only thing I lost is the compass and audio information readout in the dash. I don't care about the audio info, but I will admit I'd like the compass.

I do have a compass readout in the IA with a USB GPS so I am reasonably happy with that workaround.

All the functionality (steering wheel, dash controls, hvac, etc) seem to work exactly as before.

One other thing I did just remember as I have gotten used to it is that sometimes Bluetooth doesn't connect, so I have to power the IA off and on. It only takes a few seconds soi can live with it.

For me it was really worth it to not need an external tablet.

The caveat would be if you listen to satellite radio (I don't), it doesn't have a receiver for it built in so I think you have to use an app and stream it via a Hotspot.

One thing to think about, when I set this up last year Gaia did not work via carplay or Android auto, so this was really my only option outside of a tablet.

It does work now though and it seems pretty decent, so if you don't want to commit to replacing the stock head unit that may be an option VS getting a tablet..

I don't use the radio or satellite, so that really didn't bother me.

One other thing is to me the audio (even before I replaced the speakers) sounds better than the stock 7". The eq function is much better in the IA.

Thanks man. The fact that it's some odd thread that matches nothing but some other custom made knob that's twice what the RAM part is ridiculous. It might be the best way for now but still looking at my options.

So here was my solution. I run gaia on a full sized ipad with a catalyst case on it. Ram made a holder that worked with that setup. I just mounted the ram ball high on the back of it (uses two screws instead of all four but plenty strong). then I used the 67 designs arm with the ram adapter to attach it to the mount.
