It would be interesting to see if we have covered all the beaches / islands / peninsula on the Texas Gulf Coast. I am guessing we have. It has become a goal of mine (living in the Houston area).

So far the following are my impressions:
Galveston - west end has some soft sand and trails to ride on

Matagorda East (Egret Island) - has some soft sand for about 20 miles, it was fun to drive since it was not very crowded (a car every half mile or more) and could pick up some speed. I got my transmission temp to 207 degrees before pulling off to the hard sand next to the water to cool off a bit.

HIgh Island - is mostly closed for now for reconstruction or refurbishing

Bolivar / Chrystal Beach - is fine for some soft sand and cruising

Sufside - is fine for some soft sand and cruising

Sargent Beach West - is fine for some cruising (a lot less people), nothing really technical

Sargent Beach East - is not very crowed and there is not much soft sand, but more off road sand "trails". I forgot to note how long this stretch of beach is, but is it substantial. Good place to test out the premium shocks on the Mojave! At the far east end there is a unique sand mound that looks more intimidating than it really is...just need to get some momentum going before tackling it.

Would love to hear other's opinion and scouting reports of other beach up and down the coast.

What beaches are available to drive on between Egret Island and Corpus Christi?

I see Port Aransas and Mustang Island...anything else?

Port A eventually travels up to Whitecap beach which will eventually take you to Padre Island.. As a CC resident I should probably know this. There are a few private areas that will force you back to the main road. If you are going to spend that much time driving I say go straight to the island. 60 miles of uninterrupted beach. No houses, condos or any of the other crap that usually goes along with the "Beach". If you are a veteran, get yourself a pass and drive it for free. Otherwise $10 charge.

Thanks, this is intended to be a one day (long day) trip from the Houston area… So I don’t think I can do the Padre Island, however, it is most definitely on the radar.

just want to make sure I cover everything I can in terms of drivable beaches from Galveston up to Padre.

thanks again.

From Houston go to Galveston Island and drive to the south end under the bridge. I call it the Empty Quarter as in the eponymous region in the Sahara Desert. It is flat and deceptive. Take a tow rope if you want to have fun rescuing hapless tourists.

Take $2 and cross the San Luis Bridge. It is possible to drive south to Surfside on the beach but can be risky to impossible at some times in some places.

Of course, you can drive it the other way from Houston to Surfside and then up the coast highway to the bridge. A pretty drive along the Gulf of America.

Thanks, I agree, it’s deceptive! Just getting into the big part (off the road), I’ve seen folks get stuck!

Is there a time that South Padre is busier and should be avoided? I'm planning to stay a few days on South Padre mid Sept. With 60 miles of shoreline I figure at some point it's gotta be empty.

Hey I'm Houston (Pasadena) based too.

Would like to add, Bryan beach down in freeport, Gon' need 4x4 lots of soft sand, some trails, has a decent hardpack if ya get scared. Has a lot of drift wood. (Pics from 11-20-2025)

Didn't like doing it alone and without a winch. I have snatch straps for now.
