You gotta check out this video of the new usefulness of rear steering in a pickup truck. Someday maybe that'll come to the Gladiator?

That was cool engineering.
I had the “Weissach” axle on my GTi back in the day. It was a passive system. Improved the handling. Honda had 4 wheel steering I think on the old Prelude, I also recall Mitsubishi had one of their GT type cars with a “live “ system. I hope they move this tech to the trucks! Thanks for posting.

4 wheel steering I think on the old Prelud
sure did!

Yeah I found it interesting cuz it was more than just "easier to park in a lot" kind of thing. That trailer anti-sway was impressive. Also that braking thing was neat. cool tech, currently only on the top sports cars and SUVs, but it'll all trickle down to regular stuff sometime.

Mitsubishi 3000gt available with active aero and 4 wheel steering. one of the greatest cars ever made. also they had this on trucks in the 90s no?

it probably wasn't a "smart system", but you're right, 3SI cars like 300gt VR4 have 4 wheel steering, but again i think it was a locked ratio of the front wheels turn angle (or whatever they call it).

Didn't watch the video yet lol. Helpful tech is nice though. Took a minute to get used to JK unlimited radius, taking a minute more to get used to JT for sure. Had to re-swing a few turns today on the trail.

I'd love it was made into a decent priced aftermarket bolt on kit.

Coordinated steering adds a lot more complexity. Even your most primitive off road rock ram equipped buggy requires a well designed hydraulic power circuit as well as tuning of the steering to avoid over or under steering. The much more advanced systems we saw in the 90’s and early 2000’s had speed and lateral acceleration dependent assist and were and still are very complicated.

I’m not sure I would want all the sensors and hangydowny bits when confronted with this:

Even a system that locks the rear wheel steering forward on the highway, but has an unlock feature that you could manually control (full or half driver/full or half passenger) that we could use to maneuver at slow speeds around trees or switchbacks or parking lots would be nice. Basically at speed is normal, but could manually flip on and off.

I'd be down for that.

Why would Jeep do 4 wheel steering when they still haven't perfected 2 wheel steering (allegedly).

4 wheel death wobble sounds exciting, like pull over and enjoy a long slow cup of coffee exciting.

I still say it brings needless complexity to a driveline they advertise as being perversely capable in trying conditions.

that's hilarious, and true... BUT its possible this advanced system could make death wobble go away completely.

Watch the video and see how the trailer sway is no more. Maybe it could make front end sway, no more too.

I'd mention GM already did this, but someone beat me to it. So did Honda with the Prelude, there were a few other manufacturers that did it back in the day.

I could be wrong, but it looked like he hit the brakes on the trailer sway test. That would make the trailer sway even more. But I've seen the older GM reports where the rear steer really helps with towing.
