Seriously, though - I've seen and dealt with a few devices lately that are used to remotely control the things that help them guide loooong strings of carts back to the store (that was sort of cool - he had a controller in his hand and was guiding a line of carts several feet long back to the store), a device that an employee used to scan shelf tags and order things for you that they were out of stock (weird looking device), and more.

Wondering - what does an OBDII diagnostic tool look like? I've seen a half dozen different shapes and sizes.

If he had a tricorder and red shirt, he is likely dead by now ... Likely never made it back into the store ...

Besides, you can't shoot someone just for trying to steal something, and for all ANYONE knows, there was nothing nefarious involved. All guessing or speculation and all likely 100% wrong.
(sort of like the criminal who was NOT charged with murder for killing a store owner because the store owner shot at the criminal as the criminal was fleeing. The criminal's life was in danger - not the store owner's. )
