Stick or mig? I can't lay a good looking stick weld for shit, my mig welds look moderately not horrible occasionally though.
An old Miller Arc welder. Mine don’t look good either. I need lots of practice. I just welded, then grinded, the welded in any gaps, then repeat, until I was satisfied.

One thing I have found while running my Rubicon-style steel bumper with the ends taken off - your own front tires can toss rocks into the air that you run into.
My 2020 ended up with a nick and chipped paint (a literal ding in the metal of the hood) when I was turning a corner where gravel had washed out of a guy's driveway onto the road. The rock flung up and I hit it - luckily the momentum was gone after it hit the hood because the next hit was the windshield.

I've run into a really messy windshield in winter driving with the "stubby" style.

I like both types - but for protection, prefer full width (with the ability to remove ends if necessary if I ever do get off road with it)
Sorry, too many of the after market bumpers just don't do it for me - look more like a blacksmith made them for a Panzer or something.
But that's just me and it's opinion, which is what you'll mostly be getting here anyway.
