Do any of you experience chipping of tires when off-roading? If so, under what conditions? I've seen reviews on the Falken M/Ts having the issue but the majority of folks reporting this issue state that they really abuse the tires on rocks, and that Falken is generally cool with warrantying them by offering a major discount on future purchases. My question is: do you guys that rock crawl or go on sharp terrain experience chipping? I've read a couple accounts of BFGs having weaker sidewalls and slicing (including the thread above this one), Nittos wearing down too fast, and basically every tire having a "known" issue. I've also read lots of great reviews on all the big tire names/models, including Falkens. I'd think that when rock crawling you'll lose chips of tires from the sheer friction of spinning tires on less-than-smooth rock. Anyone care to share experiences? Mine is not too bad, only on one side that got hugged against a rock. But it's still within 2k miles and concerning.

I'd never buy a set of nittos again in my life, they are crap tires for on road use and life. As far as BFGs go, I have ran those for a while on my fourth set and the K02s can get you 50,000 miles if you take care of them the right way. I had 33,000 miles on my JKU when I sold it and they still had 50% of their life left and that was just a 4 tire rotation, and that's all I ever do on them is a 4 tire rotation. I abused mine pretty good and never had any issues out of the BFGs. As far as Falkens go, I've always heard good things about them. Never heard of much people complaint about them.

I have the stock Falken M/Ts on my Rubicon JT. Normally, my rock crawling does not cause chipping on these tires..... but, when I am off-road, sometimes I play around in 2 wheel drive and do donuts and spin the rear tires and do some slides in the dirt and the rocks/pebbles.., ie. let the clutch out in 1st gear, turn the wheel, gun it, and play around with some drifting until I have to shift.... I have seen some small inconsequential chipping of the Falken M/Ts in the rear because of this, but, I chalk that up to tire abuse. If I was to stay with this size tire on my tire change, I would buy the same tires -- hard to beat their off-road, on-road capabilities for the weight (D rated). Note: bigger sizes are much heavier (E rated). I have 9K miles on them now with serious miles in various off-road terrain.

See videos depicting chipping. Similar conditions when I noticed mine having it

There are other vids I came across last night but can't find them easily at the moment

My 255/75R17s never showed any wear even after 10k miles. Maybe 2/32" wear from factory with weekly offroading trips to the mountains covering mostly gravel and ruts and a few rock steps to climb over. The 35x12.5R17 showed the wear after the first outing, but it WAS the first time I climbed over a large rock or two (see my thread on the 35s)

All tires will suffer damage from heavy rock use. Nittos and BFGs are both high quality tires, but each model they make has an intended use. Stay within the parameters of the intent, and you should be fine on either brand. The perfect tire for all conditions has yet to be designed.

Yeah I don't know, personally I abused 2 sets pretty hard off roading, 35 12.5-17 KO2 all terrains, not sure about the mud terrains but mine were E rated tires and I never saw chipping and they still lasted me 40,000+ miles on the road. Never sliced a set against a rock and have never saw a set get sliced on a trail. They are a pretty common tire for off-roaders in NC because of how well they do in the mud, rocks, and in snow, rain and Ice, and they are do well on the beach. I'll never run another brand on anything I take off-road that's also a daily driver.

Now if I wasn't daily driving mine I'd have a set of Geolander M/Ts on mine.

I would consider going to Geoglandar M/T G003 in a heartbeat and probably go up to 37s because they look great. My 32" Falkens were so good I upgraded but the chipping has me concerned

Just not something I have ever seen folks with the youtube channels and rigs address. They rant and rave how much they love their tires but never really do closeups to show how they wear

You won’t hear them talk bad about them because they want to keep getting free tires from their sponsors...
