Toyota recalling 381K Tacoma pickups over axle issue raising crash risk

Toyota on Tuesday announced that it will recall about 381,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks to address an issue with parts falling off the rear axle that can impact the vehicle's performance and raise the risk of a crash.

Late April notification so if it falls apart before April, are you on your own?

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota is recalling about 381,000 Tacoma midsize pickup trucks in the U.S. because a part can separate from the rear axle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall covers certain trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years.
Toyota said in a statement Tuesday that welding debris left on the ends of the axles can cause some nuts to loosen over time and eventually fall off. That can cause the part to separate from the axle, which can affect stability and brake performance.

Again, small tears ...

That can cause the part to separate from the axle, which can affect stability and brake performance.
@Lunentucker you beat me to it. Toyota's press release echos your comments but ends in a much more dire note " ... this can affect vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash".

Sounds like a simple fix. It says they'll tighten the nuts and repair any damage. The news says nothing about removing the welding debris that was the cause of the problem in the first place but I imagine that will be part of it. Not too difficult, unlike the F150 max tow axle recall where they will have to replace either the entire rear axle or the axle shafts and probably the hubs along with the scarily too-small and fragile bolt that holds them together. Or maybe they will end up redesigning the entire assembly.

They always downplay the risk. While it is true that the rear axle falling apart can cause "loss of stability and brake performance", that's a pretty mild statement.

381 grand! NTSA must be working hard on these guys. I just had All Jeeps here in ABQ install my ACT clutch (excellent by the way), and the couldn't believe all the recalls on the 2022 JTR. I just took care of the clutch recall.

I'm wondering what part. I've had five Tacomas since 1998, and I can't recall what that would be.

Wrangler JL's had crappy weld problems with the track bar brackets that necessitate a recall also.

Toyota did me right twice on Tacomas well out of warranty.
First was buyback at 1.5X KBB retail.
Second one they replaced the frame and all associated components adjacent and necessary.
Both were years and 10's of thousands of miles past original warranty.
Every maker has issues, but how they handle them is what sets some apart.

No company is immune to what I consider almost silly, if not obvious stuff.

It's so hard to trust what you read as headlines these days.

I got a chuckle out of how this one "headline" was written -

Jeep Gladiator Toyota recall over crash risk Screenshot 2024-02-28 091702

Parts can fall off! Wheels? Brakes? Driveshafts? Shocks? Springs? Maybe a simple screw that holds a wiring bracket?
Parts can fall off! Panic time for the unsuspecting driver who doesn't bother to read the whole thing.

Still - how do you miss such a thing during assembly or inspection.

Toyota owners - be careful, parts can fall off.

My 23 is affected. What a POS. I called....and they told me April before a fix. I asked the same question ' So I just drive until the axle falls out? ' I asked if they can inspect it now they said no. lol

lol at all this ' Toyota quality and reliability ' I always hear about.

I certainly don't recall having all these kinds of problems and recalls back in the days of the TJ/LJ..... Seems like then it was more a problem of incompetent drivers exceeding the limits of their vehicle. Now the limits of vehicles (usually) are way way way way way past that of most drivers.

Except for when parts fall off
