I am a bit confused here. So you started this drilling and draining before you even looked into the cost and sourcing of the filter and pan?Did an oil service today at 26k miles (23 Diesel)... got scratching my head looking at the trans TC and diffs (been deep in water lately). The diffs were pristine (breathers elevated to firewall), as was the TC. The trans with no "breather" vent found and so was never raised, I decided that it would e prudent to take a look. Needed a 2' extension on the hex wrench to bust out the plug. I put the slug of fluid that came out and put a few drops on some white paper... Was dirty enough that I felt it was time for a change, so off to NAPA.
They didn't have it in stock so off the stealer parts dept. Never saw a new pan come with the filter, but it gave me an idea... instead of doing the transmission "waterfall" fluid dump, I took a step bit and drilled a 3/16" hole. Went and ate lunch and the pan was empty.... well almost, I remembered BMW (also uses ZF) always had an extra qt or so above the filter, so I took off all but two bolts and as soon as I broke the o-ring out of the trans, I got another rush out the hole. Let that drain.
Took the pan down and nary a drop spilled!

I was all set to weld in a bung until I looked up the price for the filter alone and gasket.... ALMOST the cost of the whole kit including a new pan! Drill Baby, Drill! (Note to Mods: that was not meant to be political!)
