I'm comparing the Kodiak Canvas and the Rightline Gear bed tents.

Spending $4000+ on a rooftop tent set up makes no sense to me and the family. We tent camp and in the late spring just the wife and I will be doing a big trip to Colorado.

Aside from the Kodiak being more than twice the price of the Rightline, are there any other major differences?

Anyone have real world experience with them?

The Kodiak is definitely going to be roomier. The Rightline is a pretty basic tent, and the price reflects that. I can tell you from experience using truck bed tents that any amount of space you can get is golden. Especially on the Gladiator.

You're already going to be pretty cramped in there with the small bed, so having the ability to easily sit upright anywhere in the tent is going to make it that much more bearable. The Kodiak will let you do that, the Rightline won't.

There's also more utility to the Kodiak. Zippered windows, more interior pockets, etc. All little things that will add to the overall enjoyment of the whole camping experience.

Yeah for sure the Kodiak looks like an actual tent rather than the Ridgeline.

Having watched a few videos of people setting them up and taking down, the Kodiak looks pretty damn solid!

I used a Napier tent with airbedz mattress. I also got the napier annex which gave a bunch more room. The only issue I had with this setup is actually that, the setup and taking down part. If I was going to set it up and stay put for a couple days or more it would be great. If, however I was going to be running the trails and be in a different location every night I would not have this setup. I actually purchased a small hybrid trailer and love this setup best. I also used a RTT. Would love this setup if I was 20 years younger and getting up and down the ladders was easier, especially late at night.

Yeah for us a RTT just doesn't just can't be justified.

I'd love a camper trailer... Might have to do some research into that now too haha

I bought the Napier and will use our sleeping system we used in the other tents (Shipping blankets as a base, Backpacker inflated pads inside sleeping bags as mats, and blankets/pillows from home) once my wife decides she wants to go camping now......

Maybe a bit late, but I went with the Napier tent.

Looked into several, including the 2 you are interested in.

In the end I didn't want to worry about a dusty, dirty, muddy, or wet pickup box. So I chose the Napier cause it has a full floor.

Just some food for thought.

Yeah having a sealed unit is certainly a plus. We have a trifold tonneau on the bed and making sure everything fits under that during driving is a must. the floor would certainly make that less of an issue

I have a Bedrug and Rightline bed tent and a cot. Comfortable for one, 2 people would definitely be a tight fit, with no room for personal items, unless you're crafty or very creative. The Bedrug makes a huge difference for padded comfort and also acts as insulation.

For me it's a negative - it means you have to totally empty the truck before setting up the tent. I don't want or need a full floor. I lay a tarp down, a couple of old blankets I keep around, and then my bedding. Besides, when you move around in a tent with a full floor, things can shift and move. No tent floor, you can setup your bedding, toss your stuff in, and then put the tent up.
You don't have to empty the truck to take the tent down. Easier that way - remove tent, then climb in and take care of what's in the truck.
I can even leave my cooler in the back when setting up the tent.
No way I'd buy a tent with a floor for my truck.
