Undercoated my JTR-Surface Shield

I live in Ma. and in a town that uses straight salt without any sand when treating the roads, so when I purchased my truck, I had planned on doing an undercoating. I used Blaster Surface Shield, and it took three cans to do all the undersides of the truck. After spraying it on, I did wipe down all the surfaces to remove the excess and ensure that all areas were covered.

What I liked:
Aerosol cans make the application easy to reach tight spots
The product stuck/bonded well to the frame and seems like it will hold up for a while
It did make the frame shiny or like a gloss finish, which I liked, though not everyone will
Cheap-I think I paid ~$50 for a case of six cans

What I didn't like:
Aerosol spray going in my face due to a slight breeze
Aerosol cans don't spray well if not upright-Not a Surface Shield thing but worth noting
It ruined the clothes I did the work in
I had to take two showers to feel like my surface wasn't shielded-Tyvek suit next time

Interesting indeed it’s a lanolin based product so it shouldn’t ruin your clothes I wouldn’t think. Might be a bitch to clean but should wash out. I used Surface Shield which seemed to do a good job it’s been almost a year and it’s still there though I will be respraying again soon.

I just can't get the oil out. To be fair, I was pretty covered in it.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm West coast and don't really have salt worries but still want to be proactive about frame care. I've called a few places and asked around and generally got mocked for wanting to coat the frame since we don't have salt here..

Ive done multiple brackish water crossings (Pismo, Usal, etc) though and taken her out to the salt flats, and frames don't just magically stop rusting entirely if you go far enough West

I looked this up and added a case of it + a set of painters whites to the ol Amazon cart, gonna lump this in with my rainy season prep.

I've lived in Michigan most of my life, my 65 F250 has lived here all it's life.

Any oil, engine oil is primarily what I use, but any barrier from water and oxygen will stop rust.

I generally, for my personal vehicles, use a mix of drain oil and toliet wax rings.

For my wifes, I use Woolwax because it smells nicer.

But anything works, from stuff in a can, to stuff from a pro, whatever you're comfortable with.

I purchased the surface shield from Home Depot this summer and coated my gladiator... I thought it was worth the price and effort. I do recommend that you lay down plastic before spraying because the overspray will coat the floor (my driveway) and be very slick for a long time...oops . I'm eager to see how it holds up in S.Ohio with salt and winter, time will tell.
