I remember when I was a young lad looking for a used vehicle, the salesman and I went for a drive in a car (I was driving), I said it’s pulling to the right.
He said and I shit you not, “It’s supposed too, in case you fall asleep you won’t cross the center line into oncoming traffic” I may have been young but I wasn’t a sucker, straight back to the dealership and I left.
Dude, give that guy a cigar! Talk about a real salesman! ??

I don't care at all if they make an effort to factually answer. The guy can even use MY phone if he wants. Luckily the sales guy I used was a career sales person and knew......... but I hate it when you ask something fairly simple and they shrug or move on to something else, or make something up.
I had a college teacher who would actually give you partial credit for a question if you at least put down how or WHERE to find the correct answer. If you left it blank, you got no point, if you were wrong, you got no point but if you didn't know and told him how to find out, you got partial credit. He said he didn't expect everyone to always remember every little detail but he did expect them to be able to figure things out.
The way I was trained, and they way I trained, was if you don’t know the answer to acknowledge it and write it down (so they see you care) and to say you aren’t positive but you’d rather be sure of your answer and find the correct answer asap. Studies show that people respect that way more if they do that. The way my mind works, I agree.

I preface this by saying that I won’t sell anything without at least having a decent knowledge of the subject matter. I don’t care if I’m selling envelopes or highly technical medical equipment (only sold the latter). I also will flat out not buy from a sales person I do not respect and I will and have literally said it to their face. I’m pretty tactful about it, but with my sales and sales training background, it’s up there with poor customer service as my biggest pet peeves within a retail environment.

When I graduated from college I was looking at Tacoma's (Dont Shoot Me) and was going to trade in my Volvo XC Wagon. They asked about the motor which was an inline 5 turbo. The sales guy was so adamant that it was not a turbo that he bet me the Tacoma that it wasn't. Well, it was and I didn't get the Tacoma.

Years ago, in the era of the Pentium processor, I was in a Sear store shopping for tools - which was near the computers. A guy walked in and was looking at computers. A sales person walked up and the customer asked what the tape drive was for - he'd never seen one. The sales guy said so you can make copies of your stuff. The customer asked- why do I need copies, it's in the computer, right? The sales guy was at a loss and I almost laughed out loud (I was in IT at the time, building computers for high-end control systems). I thought it he can't answer what you might like that tape drive for - he's selling the wrong product. I know why the customer didn't know - of course - but the sales guy struggled and was making up silly answers along the way.

When I was shopping for my gladiator, I was looking for a max tow or a rubicon. Three dealers in a row did not know what the max tow package was. I ended up with a Rubicon. I don’t think any of the dealers ordered max tows because they had now clue what it was.

With all due respect, what’s your point? I’m asking since you quoted me.

I should have concentrated on this one sentence of yours instead of the whole thing -

I preface this by saying that I won’t sell anything without at least having a decent knowledge of the subject matter.
The guy selling computers had no clue..........

After I had bought my Willys JT, I went back to the dealership for some add-ons promised at purchase. While waiting for an Uber home I went and borrowed a tape measure to get some height measurements as I was certain the Mopar lift gave me way more than two inches (it did). A sales guy came out and not knowing of I was interested asked me why I didn't look at a Tacoma instead. I looked around asking myself is this a Toyota dealership? Do I look cheap or something tells you I'm just kicking tires and can't actually afford a gladiator? What a weird and stupid experience. Guy knew nothing about the Willys package or the gladiator in general. It's a Jeep dealership dude!

Now that is crazy, even for a sales person who knew nothing about your JT!

I had a similar experience. I was pretty sure I wanted a gladiator but having read about the steering issues I wanted to see for myself. I went to the closest dealer and walked around the lot waiting to take a test drive. They wanted me to test drive a base Sport model..... I declined and said give me something with power windows at least.

After the test drive we go back and I said "Yeah I really like it, the steering seems fine to me". I asked about finding a Sport S in Gator, and picked out some options. He said he'd get back to me, but first let's go back outside, I got one more I want to show you.

He leads me to the back lot and a used white Ford Ranger. Needless to say I did feel insulted. I told him that I came here to buy a new Jeep and he's trying to sell me a used Ford.

I went all internet after that.

What I found odd was that when I first looked at Gladiators at the dealership west of town, I was looking Sport S with max tow. But I wanted some other options. Then my wife comes in and wants even more options, certain colors and so on. The guy never once tried to up-sell me, never even mentioned Rubicon at all, not once. All he did was mention the differences like the sway bar disconnect and height and tires. But he never even seemed interested in "let's take a look at Rubicon and see if that might be of interest" and they had some there so it's not like they didn't have any to check out. We led the way on what we wanted.

Other places have tried to sell higher - "up sell", or talk us into something we didn't want or need.

He did ask what made you decide on a gladiator over a Tacoma? I’d ask people stuff like that to get their feedback. It was sometimes helpful with future sales. Things I didn’t think about. Also, he clearly wasn’t trying to sell you a car and was just making conversation. Most car sales people don’t drive the cars they sell. They just got a job where they were hiring or what is a good dealership to work for. Maybe he’s a big Toyota fan. Nothing wrong with that as long as he knows his product and is professional.

I'm not sure if the used Ford or what I expect was probably a used Tacoma waiting for me somewhere on that lot is worse. That's almost pathologic... 8-)
