I’ve done both. Neither are exciting. But the reason for the trip is. Taking my AMC 401 to Kenosha, the headquarters of AMC. It’s going to its birthplace, to be machined/reborn.
Who is doing the work? I likely know them or at least know of them. There are only so many who do that sort of thing - one guy can make a 360 dance and sing and put out massive power on a small budget.

Theres really only one good way to get anywhere from MN, and thats across northern Wiscy and the Upper Peninsula. Only downside is thats heading east, and IMO east sucks in general. Too many people out that ways.

Heading west you gotta get across the Dakotas and eastern Montana.
Heading SW you've got SoDak and/or Nebraska.
Heading south you've got Iowa (and Iowegian drivers).
Wisconsin isn't horrible except it leads to Illinois. Gross.
My son lives in Florida has driven in other countries including Korea where you have to be insane or close your eyes, and several U.S. states. And who does he complain about? yeah, you guessed it.

I think the worst I've driven in is Iraq.

Egypt is a close 2nd. Egypt depends on where you're at. Downtown Alexandria or Cairo was a shit show, but get to the outskirts and it wasn't too bad. Just a lot of very questionable vehicle conditions and cargo loads. I have photos somewhere of a camel standing up in the back of a falling apart toyota truck doing 100kph down the highway.

I will admit though, that even though they are scary drivers, a lot are damn good drivers. I've seen tour bus drivers naviate through streets so tight that I would hesitate to take my Gladi down.

Trust me, KS and NE are worse - Most of Iowa is not flat unless you get up to the areas where the glaciers smoothed things out. It's hilly here and far worse to the south of us or east of DSM on I80. Truckers hate that stretch. We have some nice roller-coaster hills here where teens taking them too fast went air-born - and died over it. Decorah is massive hills and steep bluffs.
Goodell and Belmond - it's so flat field tile won't drain, there's 0 pitch to the fields. You'll never see waterways or washouts. Water won't run.

I think 80.

Which part - I80 or I35? What in the world do you do that takes you through Iowa?
80

Dons machine shop. Tony is the owner after don sold it to him a million years ago. As I understand it, the shop is filled with amc fan boys.

80 until Davenport, where I’m staying Thursday night. Then 88 and 39 north into sconnie.

Heard there is a highway in Egypt called the Highway of Death. It's them driving at night with their headlights off at over 100 mph. A lot of head on crashes because of it. They do it so they won't get stopped by bandits.

I feel dumb. Of course it would be 80. That's what I take to go to CO and the other direction to get to WI.
70 is minutes from me. Runs along the north side of Altoona which is about 15 minutes north of me

Having driven across both of those states more times than I can count, I can firmly say that I10 across Texas is infinitely worse than both of those combined!! OMG
I hated driving across Kansas. Steering wheel cocked sideways to fight the wind, absolutely nothing to see out there, and the roads were terrible.

Front axle is now officially beefed up. And I found out that my FAD wasnt bad after all. The teeth on my outer shaft were bent causing the collar the FAD slides back and forth to be wedged in place and wouldnt allow the FAD to do its job.

RCVs, Synergy Iron Knuckles, Gate Keeper light brackets, replacement FAD(already had it and cannot return), and my @Metalcloak Baller Joints all installed today.

My FAD splines prolly look like that too...... Good to replace those shafts as failure would be likely inevitable.

More pics and thoughts on this please!!!!! I look at them at least once a week. :CWL:
Sure, I’ll get some tomorrow…….fairly simple install, just plan for most of the day putting it together. You’ll need someone to help twice during the install, once putting the frame in, once putting the drawer in. both are pretty heavy. This will take up pretty much all of the bed, you might have 4 inches at the top. It ways about 180lbs total.
