I was wondering the same thing. Can someone explain like I’m 3? What is so difficult about holding that nut in place? Looks like you can easily get your fingers in that hole to hold the nut while you start to tighten the bolt? A socket would clearly fit.

For the factory, they need SPEED and ease. They aren't going to try to reach with fingers and reach for tools. Insert nut by holding handle, run the bolt in - done.
The idea is to reduce tool use and time. Once the bolt is started in place the nut with a larger surface against the frame isn't going to turn, especially when the bolt is driven in fast/quickly.

Think speed and ease and the old Einstein equation T=M

YOU and I could figure it out and do it - but think of these things coming down the line, dozens a day. Once you've toured a few auto plants (and tractor plants) you'll see how quickly things have to happen and for all we know, when these are put in place the person is UNDER the truck frame, not standing or sitting next to it.

Like another said it is a flag nut. They are used to ease the assembly process by making the nut easy to hold and keep it from turning eliminating the need for a back up Wrench.

I hated how those flag nuts looked. I removed mine & trimmed them. Or you could replace them with the 'regular' type flange nuts used on some of the other control arm connections.

Or you could simply not worry about it because it's a factory install and fairly common......
Just a thought........ I'd be more worried about a few other things.

Ever drop a nut or a socket into a frame rail? Good luck getting it out. Will haunt you for a lifetime...rattling around in there. Ask me how I know...lol.

Those things make life easier and simpler. all you have to worry about is the bolt from the other side. No trying to hold both

Just a thought ... the same could be said for pretty much every modification any of us makes. And, for the record, I wasn't worried about it at all. I just didn't like the way it looked, so I changed it. And I had fun doing it.
