Wheels for Overland

Hi everyone,

please excuse my ignorance here.

my Overland has 18” stock wheels that I’d like to replace. My goal is 37” tires. I want to do the wheels and tires cheaply since all the other mods cost so much. I’ve selected the Milestar Patagonia as my tire. A set of 5 of those is roughly $1,250, which is great for a 37” tire with such good ratings imo.

My questions are:

should I go with a 17” rim or 18”?
9” wide or 9.5”
Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

17" are generally less expensive than 18" so just look at rims you like with the offset/backspacing you want and then pick the cheapest. DTD is running a sale on rims right now. https://www.discounttiredirect.com/

thanks for the reply. Is there a good source to determine backspacing and offset? Completely uninformed on that topic.

Sure, I always use the charts here http://www.galantvr4.org/docs/backspacing.htm

Stock wheels have 45 offset which is about 6" backspacing. If your 37" tires are 12.5" wide you'll probably want something around 4.75"-5" backspacing but I could be wrong. Look at some of the 35" and 37" tire threads here and see what wheels they used and how far they stick out. The more they stick out, the more crap you'll have thrown on your doors. Also you should check to see if your state has any laws about tires sticking out.

This is my advice, based on a lot of personal experience, take it or leave it. Don’t buy an expensive Jeep, and spend a lot of money on it, and cheap out on tires. Your tires are the only thing that touch the road. There’s nothing worse than shitty tires, and they only get worse as they wear.

But the tires I mentioned aren’t shitty. They have very good reviews here.

I appreciate the link. I must say as someone with a background in working with numbers and construction, I can’t understand any of this andI don’t see large tires in the matrix.

It's just a learning curve. You'll figure it out. Ever since I got my first Wrangler in 2014 and joined the Wrangler forums, 90% of the people that get Wranglers want to put on a lift and add big tires, mostly 35" but some go to 37". And the same is true with the Gladiators. Every week there's always a new thread from some new owner that wants a lift and tires. Just go through these threads and look at how far the tires stick out and then see if the person that posted the pic added the size and offset of the wheels; and go by that. Or you can reply to their post and ask.

So it appears that backspacing decreases and offset increases with the larger tire if I have done this right. In reality, do I need to know these figures when ordering wheels or is this done with spacers during installation?

If you're buying the tires and wheels from a local shop then they will tell you what you need.
