If it's rear axle hop, you'll see it from outside of the vehicle. And if it's rear axle hop, I wouldn't be surprised if the dealership just chalks it up to conditions and leaves you hanging. A fix would be aftermarket shocks and/or potentially rear control arms with different bushings.
If it were a slipping transfer case chain, trust me, you'd hear it. And if anything in the driveshafts was causing that kind of violent binding then I would think you'd be hearing a lot more going on as well. And probably be looking at a pile of parts.
::edit, again:: if it gets to you having to sort the problem out yourself, I'd be curious if you could swap in a super cheap set of take-off shocks from a newer year gladiator and see a difference.
