Makes sense. I've always wondered how the factory gears got away without a break-in period. After seeing this, I assume they use a similar process.
I wish I knew the answer. But I'll guess voodoo.

Do you feel the REM polishing helps with the noise at all?
Gears, when properly set-up shouldn't have any noise.

They aren't installed quite yet, but the polishing is to eliminate the 500 mile break in cycle. Hard to drive home 2 hours if you can only drive 20 minutes at a time then have to pull over and let it cool off completely.
You don't have to let them cool off completely. Just give them a break for 10-15 mins.

Drive for 15 mins or so, stop, fill at the fuel station, gas up, grab a beverage etc. and then drive for 20 mins or so, stop at a scenic viewpoint, check it out, water a tree, etc. Then stretch the next segment a little longer, wash, rinse and repeat.

And we would recommend that whether the gearset is REM'd or not. REMing is a surface treatment and does nothing to seat the gears against each other. Only time set-up and turning against each other with a few heat and cool cycles will do that.

What brand would you consider 'the best'?

There are a lot of good gear companies out there, but the best? I would definitely say genuine Dana.

They designed the Advatek gears, they use very exacting processes and they build the gears here in the USA.
