I am getting a winch for my 2021 mojave from OpenRoad (Panther Series 3s 13.5k). Friends of mine and some others in the group have winches from this brand and they do well (they work when needed and successfully recover the vehicles) and the reviews of them seem pretty good.

When peeking under the hood though they are either running the warn power interrupter (one person) or they are running straight from the battery with no disconnect or fuse. I would rather have the extra step of having to turn power on to the winch than have a live wire 24/7 on the front of my jeep.

I was looking at different options and the manual switches have an amp rating (blue sea for example) for continuous, intermittent(5 min), and cranking. The Warn Power Interrupt Kit does not mention this anywhere on their page. Is that something to be worried about? The OpenRoad page for the winch lists the amp draw as 320A at max line pull.

If looking at the switch amp limits, would I want a switch as close to that as possible? The blue sea I linked earlier is 350A continuous, there are other options from them like this one, that is 300A/500A/900A. The winch spec saying Max Line Pull makes it sound like it would be pulling up to 320A and if kept under 5 mins the blue sea 6006 would be the way to go?

I bough an inexpensive 500 amp solenoid on Amazon similar to the Warn and it quickly got too hot to touch when engaged. I replaced it with a Warn solenoid which stays cool to the touch and works flawlessly. The Warn solenoid has been in use for years and is well proven. Since I have the aux switch panel, it was an easy choice to go with a solenoid instead of a manual switch.

The manual switch works just as well; it really comes down to if you want to open your hood or not....

Also, look at the ratings on your winch about usage/cool down. It is likely something like 45 seconds on and 5 to 10 minutes cool down. I don't think that the Warn solenoid or manual switch will be the weak link if it is of proper rating and not cheap junk (like I bought the first time).....

Hundreds if not thousands of Jeep owners use the Warn disconnect. Many others use the manual switch. I've used both - manual for my 2020 and then the Warn solenoid for my 2022. I decided to go with the solenoid after having fun on a REALLY icy road rescuing a driver who had slid off into the median and buried his car in the snow. It was trouble in the wind and cold and all of the ice to get the hood open and then around to the traffic side to turn the switch to ON.
I decided it would be safer to not have to deal with the hood and maybe even not be able to get around to that side easily at times.

Your winch has a duty rating - check it out - I bet you'd fry the winch before you have solenoid or switch issues. Winches are not made for continuous duty even though some run them that way.

I used aux switch 3 to power my Warn solenoid for my winch.

You can’t go wrong with the warn interrupt.
The warn has extra hardware that I didn’t need or want to pay for to have it sit on the shelf so I pieced my set together as needed from Amazon.
