I was setting my winch rope on my gladiator to get some preload on it. Anyways I was a little pissed as I am in the front winching and making sure the winch line goes on properly. My wife comes out and yells at me that I am wrecking the lawn. Apparently you can’t winch in neutral unless someone is sitting in the seat or your wheels lock up. What kind of crap is this? Anyone else have this problem?

Before anyone asks it was running and auto trans in neutral.

Manual - Automatic?

Which shifter was in "N"?

Car on or off?

I have pushed mine in nuetral, and I was not in the vehicle.

If your drive train is engaged but your gear shifter is in nuetral I presume it won't move.

Possible I'm missing something.

Auto, trans in neutral, truck running.

Maybe I didn’t have my door closed all the way or something?

In neutral , in either shifter the drive train has no resistance except friction off tires and gears and will not remain stationary if a force is placed upon it.

From page 272 of the manual regarding AutoPark:

If the vehicle is not in PARK and the driver turns off the engine, the vehicle may AutoPark.
AutoPark will engage when all of these conditions are met:
• Vehicle is equipped with an 8-speed transmission
• Driver door is ajar or in conditions where driver door is removed an additional trigger would be if the driver is off the seat (seat pad sensor detects driver missing)
• Vehicle is not in PARK
• Vehicle Speed is 0 mph (0 km/h)
• Ignition switched from RUN to OFF
NOTE:
For Keyless Go equipped vehicles, The engine will turn off and the ignition will change to ACC mode. After 30 minutes the ignition switches to OFF automatically, unless the driver turns the ignition OFF.

If the vehicle is not in PARK and the driver exits the vehicle with the engine running, the vehicle may Auto- Park.
• Driver door is removed
• Vehicle speed is 1.2 mph (2.0 km/h) or less • Driver seat belt is unbuckled
• Driver door is ajar
• Brake Pedal is not depressed
The MESSAGE “AutoPark Engaged Shift to P then Shift to Gear” will display in the instrument cluster.

Just to add, if it was AutoPark that kicked in, you might be able to use the manual park release to get around it in the future (though, it seems ridiculous to have to do that).

Just look up “Manual Park Release” in the manual (mine has it in page 413).

I just put the transfer case in neutral when tensioning my rope for the same reasons.

If the seat belt is not buckled, the auto-park kicks in if the door is opened. It is specifically designed to keep the vehicle from running you over if you get out and it's not in park.

So if I am stuck and want to be outside when I am winching myself out I have to either put the transfer case in neutral or the trans in neutral with my seatbelt buckled up?
