Hey guys, just picked up a new Mojave. I’ve heard the windshields are susceptible to chips and cracks.

For some reason it posted my thread before I was ready…

Has anyone used any type of coating or film to help prevent cracks and chips?

Thanks!

Your going to get mixed reviews on this subject. There are plenty of clear coatings like ExoShield that can be used but, the angle of the windshield is still high and prone to getting rock chips and cracks. I have the gorilla glass installed in mine and is still not a matter if, but when.

I've had great success (several strikes no cracks) using Racing Optics film. You get three layer tearoffs to remove as the film ages or is damaged. Think NSCAR. Optical clarity is great but can take several days to clear up after installation. Similar to phone screen protector film back in the early days before glass protectors.

Chris from Racing Optics was great to work with.

honestly, I think a lot has to do with how closely you follow other vehicles. I generally use ACC and err on the side of distance. Three Jeeps going back to a jk, well over 100k miles cumulative. Only had one chip and it was from a trail, down range of a guy spinning rubber over gravel.

jeeps are definitely less forgiving of this than other vehicles.

Makes sense. I turned down a windshield warranty when purchasing the car (nearly $1300) and then started second guessing afterwards. The guy tried telling me ONE windshield was going to cost that bc it has ACC. Didn’t seem right to me. I’ve had a handful of windshields replaced over the years and have never spent more than $400.

Let me rephrase…when purchasing the **TRUCK**! Just sold my car to finally get a truck again…super stoked about it!

I definitely can see that. With this truck I can already tell I’m not as spirited of a driver as I was in my car. I should be able to keep more distance. Lifted on 35s so hopefully the rocks would just hit my grill if they are sent my way.

The Jeep was the best thing to ever happen to my driving habits. If I want double digit mileage, I have to be lighter on the gas and no reason to speed. Besides, cornering isn’t great either.

Not sure on what the cost is to have windshield replaced and recalibrate the ACC. I have heard that it can get expensive, especially if you use the gorilla glass. When it happens, I will most likely go back standard factory windshield.

Just make sure you have decent insurance coverage and it should cover most of the cost or the replacement. On my third windshield in 3 years and the glass people who have come out said Jeeps are their best customers.

Curious, and not sure why the ACC needs to be recalibrated after a windshield replacement, since the JT ACC is not attached to the windshield.
