So this is probably going to sound strange but does anyone know for certain if the windshield and front window glass blocks/stops UV? I am asking because I just took my first road trip in the gladiator (three hours each way coincidentally with the sun beaming in from the front both ways) and it seems like my face and neck have tanned up quite a bit. I was inside 99% of the time on the trip so this really has me scratching my head. I knew for certain my previous cars had UV filtering glass as I had those "transitions" lenses in my glasses and they would never darken in the car because the UV was filtered out. I also never had this "getting a tan while driving" situation in the past.

As a dude that burns very easily, I've never gotten a burn inside the JT. I'm fairly certain they are.

Windshields yes - block somewhere in the 90s percent.

Here's an interesting article -

UV rays can pass through clouds and glass. To see whether car windows are protective, Boxer Wachler took a UV-A light meter to a number of Los Angeles car dealers on a cloudless May day in 2014.

He tested 29 cars from 15 different manufacturers, made between 1990 and 2014.

On average, car windshields blocked about 96 percent of UV-A rays. The protection afforded by individual cars ranged from 95 to 98 percent.

But side door windows were far less dependable. The percentage of UV-A rays blocked varied from 44 percent to 96 percent. Only four of the 29 cars had windows that blocked more than 90 percent of UV-A rays.

“It had no correlation at all with the cost of the car, high-end car or low-end car,” said Boxer Wachler.

Windshields are more protective than car door windows because they must be made of laminated glass to prevent shattering, writes Dr. Jayne Weiss in a commentary published with the study. Car door windows, however, are usually just tempered glass.

Thanks for the replies so far....this is certainly very interesting...my wife actually just came to show me she also noticed some sun on her chest that matches the v-neck t-shirt she was only wearing in the gladiator while we were driving. I might need to see if any of my friends have any glasses with the transitions lenses or if perhaps the local tint shop that is doing my tint next month might have a uv meter. It certainly seems like we both got some sun while in the gladiator.

Through the door glass, perhaps?

Certainly possible. Front doors are getting tinted in a few weeks (shop is so busy they could only book me for a few weeks out....crazy, but I guess they are having trouble getting good tint installers these days). SO that will take care of the side windows.

My grandfather wore garden gloves with cutoff fingertips from the early 90s until he died last year at 96yrs old. He had a lot of things burned off and I lather up in SPF a lot because of that. Haven’t really gotten into the gloves while driving yet, but it’s a concern in my 40s.
