I have a 21 and never disabled the horn while walking away. I keep my fob clipped on my waist all the time, and i'll get out and go do things while letting it idle. Never had the horn go off. It does ding on the dash and display a message about the fob leaving the vehicle though.

Idk how it would be with extended idling in the diesel JT, but i've had my diesel idle for a about 7 hours without any issues. I've had the Liberty idle many many times for over 12 hours
Do you close the door? The operation I've seen most often is that what you describe happens if you get out and leave the door open, but once you close the door it does the honking.
Yup. Exactly.
My 2021 does not honk when the fob leaves the vehicle and the door is shut. Just dings on the dash like Jeepasaurus_Rex's.

Not all of them do. It's a more recent thing. Exactly when the switch occurred, I'm not exactly sure about. It may have been added sometime in the middle of the 21MY or at the start of the 22MY. I'm just not sure.

Yup, I do it both ways on an every day basis and no horn

we had a guest put her car cover on her 2013 LS460 and left it running ALL NIGHT. Older guest and didnt realize it was still running.

Melted the car cover to the grill and bumper and melted the motor obviously. Yikes.

and yes, we fixed it and insurance paid for it.
What happens to a Motor when it melts?

I heard it was a late 2021 or 2022 change. I don't know for sure either.

I wanted to clarify because this wasn't mentioned when Jeepasaurus_Rex was quoted and it was implied his should honk.

Definitely 2022, I'd have to dig back and see if those with 2021s complained about it. There's a couple of heavy threads on it.

I'd like to know how the heck they melted an engine because the melting point of plain aluminum is just north of 1,200 degrees.
You'd lose lubrication and seize parts waaay before that point. The oil would be burned off.
You'd have shut-down before melted parts other than plastic. Seized, yeah.

And melted a CAR COVER to the grill? You covered it and didn't hear or feel it was running? Just putting a cover on it should have given off vibrations.
Hard to fathom how that's even possible.

Checked to see if it honk when walking away while engine running,…nope. These post have helped a lot and see it now as a non issue, thanks to all!

Im very fortunate to have this second engine. Many know that my first one was consuming 10-12 ounces of coolant per 10k kms and FCA engineer -Norm, didn’t care. My insurance agreed to included a new engine in with my transmission vandalism claim, hence why I got a new engine.

This one is so quiet and strong and only has 9k kms on it. I was driving today and came to a stop light. The noise in the cab was so dam quiet I had to look at the RPM’s to see if the engine was running. No little vibrations in the seat or steering wheel either.

Same for mine - if it wasn't for a tiny bit of a shudder when ESS kicks in, it's sometimes hard to tell if it's running or not. When I back into the garage - as I get out I've gotten into the habit of looking at the cluster to see the message "press brake............." before getting out.
It's that quiet and smooth.
And then my wife's 2021 Grand Cherokee is obviously built for the picky person who can't stand even a hint of a running engine - it's crazy hard to tell if it's running.
And then as people age they naturally lose the ability to hear certain frequencies- it's a normal part of aging - and on top of that, those who have seen battle, guns, industrial sounds, factory work, etc. - may have more hearing loss - it's going to be tough for them.
Back in the 1990s Chrysler had to do some re-designing to the 4.0 block and camshaft drive system to quiet it and remove vibrations because people bitched - "I can feel the engine". Good grief - are we that spoiled?
They'd never survive in the 1910s.
My horse is too rough! Waaah! My horse makes noises! Waaah! ?

So you are saying the engine reached way over 1,200 degrees? And it still ran with no oil?
The 'it gets replaced' was an attempt at funny wit. Didnt work.

I see 'melted' as the problem with MY verbiage. Ill edit that original post as 'engine seized due to high temps'.

I would be concerned with 1200 degrees (idk if thats the melting point for Al, but its you and im not second guessing) and the vehicle being saved, but I know the heads were warped, timing cover was melted/deformed, and engine harness and connectors were melted/deformed.

the car was parked. she placed it over a PARKED car while it was running. She parked her car, never shut if off, placed the car cover over it, and let the car continue to run through the night.

LOL - that's enough - today's engines use a lot of plastic - one can see parts melting.

Yeah, I can step back and see where one might say "it melted". Doesn't have to seize to ruin heads or crack stuff.

Close enough. Order new engine and engine bay wiring harnesses for sure.

I think you said "elderly" originally - otherwise, wow, outside of a vehicle even I, with hearing aids and years of abused ears, can hear 'em running when standing in front of them. Her hearing must have been toast - and the car VERY smooth runner.

She killed it, buried it alive! Hope she doesn't have any pets at home.
