So im starting to research my next set. I LOVE my 255/75/17 dueler ATs. but they are fading fast. im at 6/32nds after 19,000 miles. I tow a lot so Im not surprised really. The cost per mile (because I got the tires CHEAP) is on par with top brands.

Current tires:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Dueler+A/T+RH-S&partnum=575TR7ATRHS&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

But im kicking around the idea of maybe trying another brand.

Im also looking at maybe going back to an E rated tire for towing, but in the OEM size of 245/75/17. I read on the forums that E rated tires are overkill for the JT, and actually kinda agree. I had a set before that were larger and heavier than the stockers. And when I went back to P rated tires the jeep just felt more at home with the lighter weight. But ive been reading how the E rated tires dont have as much sway while towing due to the stronger side walls. And if this next season is similar to last year Ill be putting 3,000 miles + of towing work on them across all the trips.

The E rated im looing at are Michelin ltx ms. Theyre 44lbs a tire, which is 8lbs heavier than my current tires. My question to you folks is do you think that little bit of unsprung weight will make a measurable difference in the jeeps acceleration.

Defenders:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Defender+LTX+M/S&partnum=475R7DLTX&fromTireCompare=Y

Im also curious if any one has any experience with Firestone Destination AT2s. Im beating around the idea of them as a replacement for the duelers. They are the same size as current, 255/75, and only 1 lbs heavier per tire. They have a listed treat ware rating a little higher ( 540 vs 400 ) than my duelers, and are only rated at 113 weight instead of the 115 of the duelers. The JT can max tow at a rating of 112 so im not overly concerned with that, but its worth mentioning.

Firestones:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Firestone&tireModel=Destination+A/T2&partnum=575SR7DAT2OWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

Fuel mileage is always a factor for me. I dont want to drop away from my 22-24 I get now on the highway. So the linked tires are probably the only ones ill be considering since all the research ive done shows them to be the closest analog to my current ones, or have a great efficiency rating.

I went with the BFG A/T for my gladiator in June. I wanted to go a bit smaller than the factory Rubicon and wanted E for towing. I've been very happy. Also I picked mine up at the distributer (New Castle DE) while working in area and saved $20 a tire. I rotate at 3K when I change oil and so far are holding up well. I run the same tire on my work F150 and have had 2 sets so far. I got almost 85K on the last set with rotations at 5K.

LT265/70R-17 BFGOODRICH ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 E

I prefer the E load tire for towing. I think the sidewall feels stiffer and it doesn't seem to sway or bounce as bad as the P rated tires. I have always run E on my tow vehicles and was worried it would kill the ride for the JT but its better than the stock Rubicon Wildpeaks I had on it.

ty for the input!

i like the BFG ATs but that tread pattern would murder my mpg haha

i had E rated tires before and it definitely stiffened up the ride. Im sorta leaning that way since theyre not much more weight than my current P rated ones. Im just wondering if theyll have a profound negative effect on my mpg with the un sprung weight.

i while ago I did an experiment on mpg and ive been obsessed with maintaining mine ever since. I know its a brick but considering i drive 70-90 ever day for work its a real factor for me.

I think I talked to you about the Michelin LTX in another thread, so sorry if this sounds like repeat info.

I had 2 different sets on 2 different vehicles and I didn’t care much for either of them. They didn’t do well in snow and they were easier to spin in the rain. I won’t buy them again.

Haha you very well may have, tires are a regular topic for me. My TBI addled brain often looses track of stuff before it makes it back to long term storage.

did you have the ltx or the ltx ms? I remember reading the older version of the defenders werent very good.

If you travel you may wish to consider 265/70/17. This is a very common LT size and thus it would in theory be easier to find a replacement if you are out of town and need to get a new tire. Going from the stock P245/75/17 highway tires to LT 265/70/17 load range E AT tread, I lost around 2 mpg, so about 10%. But that's going from stock to an AT tread, wider tire, LT construction, and load range E. Same diameter. On the other hand, I was able to offroad w/o worrying about popping the tires. And load range E LT tires also give good handling for emergency evasive maneuvers and twisty road carving. And they don't rock the vehicle back and forth as much when you hit a bump.

I had the LTX MS.

I had them on a Quadra-Drive Grand Cherokee and a 4wd crew cab F150.

I agree with all the points made here!

I got 65k out of my last set on my old Yukon.

Not cheap tires, but remember the tires are the only thing touching the ground.......not the place to cheap out.

My wife's JL came with the LTX MS from the factory and only lasted about 35K miles. No towing, quiet, seemed to be no issue but I never have good luck with factory tires lasting very long.

I pulled the trigger on the Firestone Destination AT2s in 255/75/17. They'll be here in a couple days and hopefully Ill have them on within the next couple weeks.

let the test begin!

I ended up buying through giga-tires.com. Ive used them twice now and both times have been pleased with the experience, AND their return policy is by far the best.

I wanted to go with discount tire but they were only willing to price match the same price as giga, and have a less friendly return policy. so it goes.
