I purchased my wheels a while back, and at the time only bought 4. I can't tell you why I did that, but I did. Well, now my wheels are discontinued, and I have a 5th 37 inch geo sitting on a steelie, that I would like to work into my rotation. So, I want to know what your opinions are on the following:

1) I have 4 gunmetal fuel shok 17x9 -12mm wheels. I cannot find another...but I can get a black one. That mixed matched wheel will be on my Jeep 80% of the time, but I would be using my 5th tire, which isnt cheap. This would be my mark of shame for not buying 5 at a time, a symbol of my lesson learned.

OR

2) I save the money for the 5th wheel, keep my tire as a spare, and consider it a loss.

Thoughts?

Have you checked around to see if anyone is selling those wheels or similar? Maybe you could buy a used set of 5 similar wheels, then sell your four and throw in the steelie. People seem to change out wheels like t shirts around here. :)

If you cannot find 1 left over in stock somewhere; I would be doing a 4 tire rotation and that would remain a spare.

I'd keep the 5th tire as a spare if you can't find a match. You could get all 5 wheels powder coated to match as well if you really wanted to rotate a 5th tire.

I for one like doing a five way rotation, so I’d be looking for 5. I like the powder coat idea, but it might cost more than buying 5 and selling 4.

Yea I have looked damn near everywhere...I even have a local shop that was scouring Ebay for me. I didnt expect majority to be for just keeping the tire as a 5th. But it saves me a few hundred for a wheel that doesnt match.

Personally, I don’t rotate with my spare. I buy the cheapest matching size and call it good. I suppose if I was displaying my spare in the bed I’d want all 5 to be the same. Then I would rotate all 5 of them.
I wonder how many more miles you actually get from adding a 5th tire into the rotation? Is it really worth it if you consider the price of the matching tire, the price of the matching rim, and your time (if you do the rotation yourself)?

It is an additional 20% of life added onto your tires...but I'm not willing to do the math to see if tire + Wheel equal whatever that 20% is lol

I may be wrong but why not dismount that tire on the spare, and put in on one of the ones that match

You aren't wrong, but unmounting and remounting every 5k will add up $ quickly

Guess it was a dumb question. That being said, I never get near the advertised mileage before the tires start getting sketchy in the snow, mud, or wet road.

Then buy tire mounting and balancing machines to save on that….

Just trying to help by offering solutions ?

Yea, they are probably all tested in the optimal environment and at optimal speeds

That's the one, but unfortunately that is the same issue I have ran into a few times. I order from a place that gets it directly from the supplier, then I get a call a few days later and get refunded my money.

I did call just in case, and they believe it will end up being the same thing here, but asked I call back tomorrow so they can confirm with FUEL

The math has been done before, and it is no more or less expensive to do 4 or 5 tire rotations. It’s purely a cosmetic thing. You don’t get ā€œmore lifeā€, you postpone the tire change and then spend more later. It’s all the same over time.

I’d say keep the spare as a spare.
