Nitto Recon Grappler 37x11.5R17 on 2020 Mojave

Hey jeepers, it’s been a while since I posted. I figured i’ll share the info i’ve gathered so far with my tire setup on JTM. My goal was to keep the stock look but fill up the wheel well as much as possible. Since most 35” tires is never exactly at 35”, I figured a 37”@65psi pressure specs will run about 35~36ish @40psi. I was correct with that assumption.

At this point, I mounted these tires on stock JTM suspension, stock (4.10)gears, and stock JTM rims. And happy to report that there’s no rubbing at full turn lock-to-lock, still getting 8th gear at 80ish speed, and still have a decent power from the get go. Maybe because it only weighs in at 70ish pounds each.

So this tire is not 37” not even 36” @40psi. The max pressure it can take (per nitto) is 65psi and maybe then it’ll be at 36.5”. I’m running it at 38psi for street which is about 35.75” tall. I took it last weekend to Geology Tour Trail at Joshua Tree Natl with 20psi on all corners; I had a blast. No rubbing even at 50mph hitting small whoops. I have the AEV Mojave spacer kit on hand and I just need to get tools, jacks, etc. so that i can install them in few days or so.

Overall I am very happy with these tires. It looks good, fills the tire wheel well, no re-gearing needed (at the moment), not too pizza cutter’ish, I only lost 1-2mph/g compared to my stock 33” M/T, and also added about 2.75” of lift.

Good info. Someone said their 35’s rubbed with that bumper but you’re not? Interesting. Did you use a programmer for the speedometer?

For speedometer, yes. I have the AEV Mojave 2” Spacer with ProCal kit. So i used the ProCal but not the lift kit itself yet. With the RR HD Full bumper, no rubbing on this tire at all.

Maybe the automatic trans handles bigger tires better, but I went to 35's/steel bumpers/winch on my Mojave and immediately decided to regear due to the noticeable performance hit. I can't imagine what 37's would feel like on 4.10...

I get that 37s aren't actually 37s, but 35s aren't actually 35s, either. That 1-2 inches of tire made a significant difference with my MT.

Yeah i’m still playing around with the pressure to get a balance of fuel econ vs comfort. Comparing it to the stock FW 33” MT, the Recon clearly has a stiffer compound which makes cornering easier than the stock MT. Another plus on Recon is much more quieter, being a soft-top, the wind noise is louder now than the tire noise. So overall the handling is much better than stock.

How much did the bumper/winch combo drop the front end? I’m worried that I’ll be hitting the bumpstops even more than I do now.

Almost an inch. Yes after the bumper/winch install, the Fox bump stop is more noticeable.

Yes, i was surprise about it this as well. I was thinking that this tire should be smack at 36” to start with, but it’s actually 35”. Another thing is this recon is 11.50”and weighs in at roughly 71lbs; that only 7lbs heavier than my stock 33” MTs. I already shop for 4.88 gears and so sure that I need to re-gear due to added radius, but so far so good.. My type of wheeling is fire/powerline roads and dry lake beds. So I don’t feel the immediate need to re-gear; but if I do it’ll be just 4.88s. Heck, I might even just go only a step lower now like 4.56 since I keep my rig very light as possible.

What gear ratio / brand you went with?

I actually put a lot of research into this, and am getting regeared tomorrow at 4.56 ...errr... 4.63 now. Nitro apparently doesn't do 4.56 (recent development) and now does 4.63. After initial concern, 4.63 is a minor difference from 4.56, and in the right direction for what I'm looking at. Many will swear I should do 4.88, but I want to maintain some semblance of MPG on the highway, and feel 4.88 would make first gear just too low for manual.

Oh nice. I did not even know about 4.63. My shop was telling me they commonly install 5.13s on JTs w/ 37 but he did say 4.88s with lighter tires like KO2 should be fine as long as I keep my rig light.

That's about my where I'm at with my Kanati's 37 12.5 17, they weigh 72lbs a piece. I'm at around 17 to 17.4 mpg's for the most part around town highway combined. I added bumpers front and rear and a winch on the front as far as weight and I got fuel 17x9 wheels on mine now. Max Tow auto with 4.10 gears and I don't feel the need to regear either it does fantastic on the road. I have a 2.5 inch Readylift sst lift kit and I added Rubicon takeoff front springs and the Rubicon fox shocks.

These measure 36.4 mounted at 34psi when brand new measured the same way you measured.

The 8 speed auto is light years better when moving up in tire size than the MT. I test drove a used MT Rubicon with 4.10's & 37's and was shocked how bad it was, remined me of my JK before regearing. Can't believe I'm saying this but 37's and 4.10's with the 8 speed is actually livable, see 8th gear often and 7th on slight inclines.

Same here. Running 37 x 13.5 x 17's on the 4.10 max tow package. I was very pleasantly surprised with the acceleration and fuel economy. I am averaging 18.4 MPG, city/highway with about 75% highway driving. I have a 93 4.0 YJ, MT, 35's, 4.56 gears. This is far superior in every way.

My experience on 37 is that you'll get D8 on flat surfaces and down hill but any slight grade and it will downshift quickly.
