Bought my gladiator brand new 2022 and I’ve been hearing a noise coming from engine at about 5-8k miles. It’s been to the dealer 3 times for it. First time they blamed the noise on a loose bolt from my bed rack as if I wouldn’t know the difference from that to a noise from the engine. Second time, I came in with audio evidence and it was confirmed by the service tech after he went on a ride. He asked what octane fuel I used, I told him regular, he advised to use a higher octane. After using higher octane and paying more at the pump noise is still there. Now in at dealer for a third time for the noise and as per them they can’t duplicate the noise and the vehicle has no codes. Im super frustrated as I’d like to put a lift and bigger tires but am afraid they’ll blame that on the noise. I really considering trading it.

Loose heat shield?
I don’t think so, I’ve had a loose heat shield before from previous jeep. Noise doesn’t happen at all time, it has a sweet spot. Happens when accelerating to about 20-30mph letting go of the pedal then steeping on it slowly and smoothly. That when I’ll here that noise. It is an evident noise and Ali most sounds like a diesel engine.

Sounds like a diesel. They couldn’t hear that the last time?
I’m at dealer right now as we speak and we took it for a spin in the parking lot and ofcourse no noise. I told him that in the lot on short stop and go we are not going to hear it. It’s super frustrating

Hello, regarding the noise, in the clip you sent it looks like you are on a bridge. Does the noise occur when on an open street ?

Yea it does, the problem is the noise comes and goes at intermittent speeds mostly between 20-30 mph.

I would still say heat shield. Every time I've had one come loose it only made a racket at specific times until it got to the point of nearly falling off. There are a ton of them on these trucks.

Start simple and then work your way up to catastrophe.

My first thought would be the dreaded lifter/cam issue... but I wouldn't think that would be intermittent. When it happens, is it only while going down the road - or does it continue if you come to a stop & idle? Next time it happens, I'd shift it to neutral (or just push in the clutch if a manual) and let the engine come down to idle speed and see if the noise changes... then rev it a few times and see if the noise rises & falls consistently with engine speed. If you only hear it when the engine hits a specific RPM, then if is probably just a heat shield (or something else rattling/buzzing/resonating at that particular RPM). If it continues consistently with the engine speed through a wide RPM range, then I'd suspect the lifter/cam issue - but if could also be something from an accessory... like the water pump or alternator bearings, etc. If the current dealer doesn't work with you to find it, try a different dealer. It seems that experiences vary WIDELY between different dealers. Good luck... let us know how it goes.

I agree.

OP, I’d also order an oil analysis kit from Blackstone or Polaris labs and have the engine oil checked. If the heat shields are fine and this is not causing the noise and let’s say the noise is in the internals of the engine, the oil analysis will show elevated metal wear.

Noise stops the moment I let go of the gas. Say I’m traveling at about 18-20mph I let go of the accelerator and immediately press the gas slowly and smoothly kinda find the sweet spot and the noise will come on. if I accelerate to a higher speed noise stops. Super weird and frustrating. I wish the noise is coming from my head but I would not be making it up and have the audio/video as proof as what I told dealer. I am going to take it to another dealer.

Almost like a rotational noise.

I would suggest trying to duplicate it at speed and engage the 4HI and see if it goes away as a data point.

How constant is the noise when driving? I have a 2020 Overland with the 3.6 and I've had a similar experience but typically only when on a high-rise bridge with a steeper incline. I rarely, if ever, hear that diesel-like clatter otherwise. I actually think it's something rotational and not the engine. Since I rarely ever hear the noise I've just kept on truckin'. No issues as of 40k miles.

It’s constant enough…and I’d say on a daily basis. But ofcourse I couldn’t duplicate the sound at the dealer parking lot.
