I suggest the first leg of your trip should be flying your buddy to NY if he is up to it, so you can make this the epic trip he deserves!

We had that idea too. Unfortunately, he’s not up to it now. He just had a few surgeries in July — the last pieces they’re taking out — so he’s still a little limited. I plan to stay out for at least a few weeks, and I hope he bounces back and has a window of feeling good before the final turn. If that happens, I’ll be taking him back east for a ride back toward our old home. That journey will be the stuff of legend.

I80 mostly until I turn south toward Denver and on through Utah, Vegas and into Southern Cal. Seems the quickest way.
I’m hoping he gets a little bounce back, and then we’ll head east for some more scenic wandering.

Valley of fire State Park North of Vegas is cool. No off-grid camping that I'm aware of. Horseshoe Bend, gotta go see Hoover dam.

I've got no recommendations for you. But a wish for you and friend to enjoy the time, I've lost many of my buddies in last few years. I've had some of the skin C's removed a few weeks back by the V.A.
Tell your friend stay strong and don't give up.

Day one, about 450 miles, almost all I-80. Pulled into a beautiful park in eastern Ohio, almost empty, but the three guys in the next site have a banner that reads “Bad Day To Be A Beer.” This should be fun.

900 more miles, through Indiana, illinois, Iowa and into Nebraska. Half way there. It’s get more primitive after this.

This trip sounds incredible, even though the circumstances are not.

Your stop in Moab is an excellent choice. I have visited Dead Horse twice and I personally found it to be one of the most beautiful vistas I have taken in. Be sure to spend a long moment an soak it up.

OK. One night in a hotel with a hot shower, and back on the road. No Jeep dealer anywhere near Denver can see me for at least a week, so I'm limping on to San Diego. I'll have to skip the Utah trails in Moab and Tocqueville Falls, which breaks my heart, but hopefully I'll live to fight another day.
