I was hooking up my power lock for my Leer Topper and found this on the back side of the cover where the wires exit the bed and go into the tail gate. The red taps are on the three wires that I suppose go to the third brake light. The three taps go into something that is shrink sleeved in yellow. Not sure what it is and I hate the type of taps that was used. I only use "Positaps" so it doesn't mangle the wires like a standard scotch lock does. You can see my taps in blue and the others in red....

Thanks,

~Tony

Does if feel like there is a device under the heat shrink or just three wires that are dead ended and the heat shrink is just there for protection?

It feels like a circuit board or something along those lines...

Odd way for the factory to connect whatever it is.

3rd brake light flasher. My 21 had one until it messed up. Took it off,it was actually inside the tailgate, connect the wiring back and good to go.

I wondered if that had something to do with the 3rd brake light. That installation from the factory is beyond poor! The wire harness it’s attached to is 5 wires with three of them having this attached and the other two are for the tail gate lock. That device is just dangling off the back of the connector between the spare and the bumper..

I bought it 30 minutes after it was unloaded from the truck! Who would’ve put it on there?
I can’t honestly tell you. What I can tell you is mine looks nothing like that. None of the other gladiators I’ve seen look like that either in person or in photos on this form. additionally, those connectors don’t appear anywhere on my vehicle (that I’ve seen) with an exception of some of the wiring that I’ve done for my radios. Think about this, the trailer brake controller that is an option can be added after the fact. The connection point is to an existing plug above the drivers left foot under the dash and a plug to the switch. They were replaces the cigarette lighter receptacle.

here are only two electrical related items that go to the bed, the rear mounted camera and the center stoplight. All of the other wiring to the bed which would include tail lights, the clear LED bed lights, and if you have the auxiliary plug in the bed that’s it and those wires run underneath the bed. I’m unaware of any additional options from the factory that would require power in the bed.

what I would do is take it back to the dealer that you purchased it from and go to one of the service riders and have them explain to you exactly what it is and why it’s there. The reason being if at some point you have corrosion related issues or a short with those wire splices they could find some excuse to avoid the warranty to any electrical connections to the tailgate.

Sorry in advance for the grammatical errors above. It’s been a long week. My eyes are worn out, my fingers don’t wanna work and the voice recognition sucks.

Mine also has the wires for the remote tail gate lock. There are five wires in the cluster and also the cable for the camera.

I'll go by there to have the dealer take a look.

I wonder what the 5th wire is on that connector? I have check both the schematics for the tailgate lock and the center brake light and only found 4 pin assignments for that connector. Two for the tailgate lock/unlock and power/ground for the brake light.

I assume you bought the vehicle as new? It almost makes me think your Gladiator was a test mule for something
