Am I stupid to Keep in garage

We got 2-3 of snow and my wife’s car is covered in salt/frozen slush. Should I just be driving it or am I right to avoid getting it nasty to prevent future rust from the lovely Midwest weather! It’s only got 850 miles on it got it in sept and we don’t neeeeed it really. I mean I paid it off last week it’s a 23 rubicon so it’s loaded with all the features i wanted that I couldn’t do myself. I’m thinking why limit my years on it!

Dude at 850 miles and assuming you have had it for months and months . You will croak before it does ?
Mine has 85000 + I roll up 2000 every month on it. I have had mine in everything . For 3 yrs. And 3 months ery little paint lose. Mostly on rear control arms. Drive it man , drive it !!!

You have no idea what’s going on the last 8months of my life lol plus I work from home. Big life events have forced us to stay home since we bought it in Aug-Sept. my last gladiator I had 23k in 1.5 years so it gets driven enough trust me

2-3 inches of snow can be dangerous to drive in. I would just stay home if I were you and let your husband go out instead for any errands/work etc. You focus on the homestead duties.

Ahh I can see it now another guy who put like a 6in lift on and 40 tires bc he’s compensating! Cheers lil man! I work from home and I def do homestead duties for my wife and make her life easier! But she also works from home too! Tough lives to stay at home on computer in undies

LOL - waaaay off the topic in all ways, but on a more serious note, I do always like reading first-hand and experienced observations on things exactly like this.
I may never get back to that state, but if I do - I know a lot more than I used to - and it's all first hand info. Some things the internet just can't explain the way real residents do or can.
It's a good day - I've learned something new.

Yeah, living here, you carry a few things, especially in the winter. My wife asked me again last week (after the 2nd storm) "do we have blankets in these Jeeps" and I said yeah, hers even has one of her quilts in the back, enough to cover two people easily. (she's a prolific quilter - if people ask to see her quilts and she's showing them, and they happen to mention they like one of them, they are likely to end up with it in a package to take home with them)

Mispronounce - that would be me - I get your state and a town not far from us twisted around now and then.......

If I make it, would likely drive my JT - snow or not, as long as there's a car wash somewhere.

The OP's post was indeed Jeep related. It even sparked conversation on how to keep them clean, what to protect, and more.
There was a question trigged by the posts about frame hole plugs, fluid film, and other methods of protecting a Jeep - impact on the aluminum parts, including hinges, how to protect the sides with running boards or steps and mud flaps.
Likely he got a lot of info out of it - and now knows many Jeep people buy Jeeps to use them (while trying to prevent rust - otherwise why all the posts about ceramic coating, metal protection products like fluid film or Amsoil metal protector and so on)

I suspect he got the point and onlookers now have ideas on how to use their jeeps but make them last for years of enjoyment at the same time.

The "brine" is a salt solution. Regardless of it being calcium chloride (CaCl) or sodium chloride (NaCl), it's still a salt.
While CaCl is safer for the concrete and environment and melts ice up to 3 times faster than "road salt", many say it's harder on our vehicle and actually accelerates rust.

Anyone noticed that the ""ice melt" you buy is wet, slimy feeling, and actually if left open, will get watery?
This is a quote from a mass transit site that explains why -
To complicate the situation further, if the road salts are not removed from the vehicle, MgCl2 and CaCl2 will pull moisture out of the atmosphere, rewet and continue their corrosive actions.

And THIS is why you do not wait to wash it off - it may seem like hey it's dry so it can't cause corrosion................
it will actually draw water from the air and get wet and cause corrosion.

it's nasty stuff that is self-wetting and gets "sticky" on roads, adhering to any sand or dirt and making it even worse yet on your vehicle.

Sure, CaCl is cheaper, works at colder temperatures, and if used properly is safer for concrete and the environment, it's it's worse on your vehicle.
You can leave NaCl open on the table and it stays dry, but CaCl will get wet and slimy if left open, and it will do the same in your frame.

Road salt corrosion is not limited to the bus exterior. During the winter months, passenger shoes bring the road salt into the bus. Frozen slush on boots often melts during the ride and the deicer in fluid form is able to seep into the smallest cracks and crevices. The result is fastener and flooring corrosion from the inside of the vehicle, as well as accelerated wear on floor runners and interior fabrics.


Gee, I wonder - whatever could they be talking about?? (this will rust or corrode your floor, dead pedal, whatever - I pull the plug and take a bucket of boiling hot water out now and then to get this crap out)
We didn't see this with "road salt" years ago - my floors didn't rot away back then.

Thanks Bill. I guess i mis-spoke. I realize the brine is also salt but I didn't realize it is more caustic than the rock salt. ugh. Also, figured the paint was taking less of a beating not having pebble sized granules being flung at the front of the vehicle at 60 mph. Guess it's a trade off.....not sure which is the bigger evil......

Those floor mats look nasty and I'm surprised your wife isn't upset over how dirty her Jeep is. It's finally getting over freezing here today so I can hit the car wash !

Hey it's your vehicle, drive it how you like or don't drive it at all that's your business, who cares what others think. I ordered and bought new an 85 Dodge Ram D-150 drove it on the road for the first 50,000 miles then garaged it driving it sparingly and still have it today with right at 100,000 all original miles on it. My point is I ordered and bought my 21 Gladdie Overland knowing it'll probably be one of the last new vehicle's I'll purchase in life. If I live another 40 years it'll look just like it's brother and garage mate Ram.... now I get to enjoy both vehicles as it's supposed to be....Pics attached

I just take mine to the car wash to clean underneath when it starts to look really crappy.
I'm in Central Pennsylvania and it's in the garage when I'm not using it.
Not just winter, the uv rays in the summer does a job on all the plastic.

For the record, my “huh” was more in regard to not fully understanding what OP wrote from an English standpoint. Seemed like a jumbled mess. And from what I did understand, it sounds like a personal issue/common sense to either cover the Jeep or park it in the garage. Then he throws in that he doesn’t really need it - what does that have to do with anything? Is he saying he can just get rid of it if it gets salt on it?!

Sorry, OP. At least, some of the thread evolved into something a little educational.
