The article said the let go of 1000 "temporary part time employees." Not to sound cruel but IF you were hired on a temporary basis you had to think this day was coming eventually.

They're prolly Right-to-Work non Union Temps. It is a sad day for them, but Stellantis has to Trim the Fat so to speak so they can maintain their profit margins to keep their shareholders happy.

Yep, that 20-30% increase in MSRP to just sell them at 30% below sticker plus dealer incentives is making them look silly. It’s March and the number of left over 2023 Stelantis anything is absurd, I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it.

While "temporary" in name, they were not like day laborers at a temp agency where contractors that pulls up and hires them for a day or two job. All the auto makers in the USA to include the import brands hire many of these workers for very long term employment with the carrot always in front of them to bring them on as permanent employees. The automakers put them through the same training as everybody else. Many of these workers had been working 5+ years in these jobs.

The recent strike settlement had them to be bringing these people in and to make them permanent employees. The automakers just cut their loses and laid them off before this happen as it easier to let go a temp classified worker than paying a union severance if they had been brought on permanent.

I think we are seeing a case of "don't hate the player, hate the game" as this is just Stellantis poking the union in the eye for losing most of their bargaining. I don't think they are the only ones playing this kind of game with their employees. Profit first!

Just out of curiosity, does business exist to make profit or to provide jobs?

That is almost a political question as peoples answers to it will fall where their political beliefs lay and probably be a sliding scale between the two.

Pure Capitalist will say profit and employees are just a manage expense no different that the light bill, taxes and insurance.

Pure Communist will say it provides jobs as managed by the needs as determined by the state.

That is not to say companies can be well run where profits are made and long term employment to be had. Just there is an inclination of both sides to overt the other to maximize their sides self interest.
