As someone who regularly attended H20 back in the early days when it was a BBQ with a car show, yep, it got ruined.

But it never was a money thing allowing other cars, it just became an insane sideshow.

The VAG and German enthusiasts like me would come down. Eventually other car subcultures would hang but it was a more laid back, relaxed event. Sometimes things could get frosty but generally it was well behaved until YouTube videos of Cort spinning around the practice track in his grey market S3 changed the game. All of the sudden it became all about the social media clout and the actual meet went away... But the broccoli headed idiots kept coming and calling it H2O.
The earlier days of H2Oi were great. Shame what a shitshow it became.

And there it is...

I'm not pinning the decline of Western Civilization on Social Media but at events like this it does become a catalyst. I went to Overland Expo West last year and I would wager that 1 in 4 people walking around there were filming for their channel.

Now the Overland Expo type events are different than something like the Jeep Week type events because you park your car in a lot and walk into the event; but events like Jeep Week are about "peacocking". Many people go to "show off" which means finding ways to get likes on YT or TikTok or the Gram. That then just snowballs into dumb@assery.

I know..."Okay Boomer". I should just sit down and drink my MetaMucil but if I ever catch one of my adult children doing things I see people doing in vidoes of these Jeep Week type events, I will smack them with my cane!!!
QFT.

I don't think Warhol could have predicted social media when he said "in the future everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame."

lol why is anyone here offended by this? There are some S-tier fucksticks that drive Jeeps and it's no different than any other mass gathering. It's not because they're Jeeps it's because idiots in large numbers.
And lots and lots of alcohol.

We should add a national Jeep meetup in Sturgis, SD. Our town is built to handle large gatherings of rowdy people. Half the businesses are closed until the rowdy people show up.

Also don't be an ass.

I used to attend a one weekend a year event called Monkey Creek. That was a nutso free event. A highly drunk weekend in North Texas where a "safe" weekend was one where there was only 1 life flight called in. Another was rednecks with paychecks; that one is insane too. Seems like the only way to weed out the people intent on being good-examples-of-bad-examples is to charge a hefty fee to get in. Almost have to take all their beer money to keep a lid on the stupid.

Rednecks with Paychecks and also the Redneck Games are perfect examples! Thankfully, they are usually held on private property and away from the general public.... It's all about "look at me"....

Expo west is a day trip for me and I always want to go but I just can't deal with all the YouTube and Instagram bullshit. They really need to start issuing permits because I'm not going to tiptoe through there in fear of getting in someone's shot anymore. There's several who called me out last time and a couple got aggressive about it. Like... you and fucking everyone else are filming, I'm here to look at things to make my wallet cry not spend my day dodging your shots.

Every one of these events is rife with main character syndrome with everyone trying to one-up the next and you are the asshole if you get in their way.

Media passes should absolutely be the norm for any event. There are content creators that do seem down to earth and respectful. But there are far more who are trying to beat the grind and do The Next Best Thing.

Couple that with the original post, where something becomes so popular (Burning Man as another example) that your count of idiots goes up because the ratio of idiot to rational person is consistent, and you've got a brewing problem on your hands.

I would make zero effort to walk around their shots. I can't stand these people and their self centered attitudes.
